Alma/Kanda, genderfuckery?

Sep 15, 2011 14:20

Potential spoilers: both were initially women in their past lives and regained full memories, but have the same Second Exorcist bodies as canon. Used "Yuki" because it's gender neutral.

At some point, Alma's whining had gotten so insistent that Kanda eventually decided complying might actually be less annoying. Alma spent the next half hour trying all sorts of different buns and braids, and Kanda just felt more and more increasingly bitter that she didn't have hair long enough to yank at, too, anymore. (Kanda didn't include the fact that Alma was not yanking at all in this thought, because why the hell would it matter?)

Just as Kanda was about to run out of patience with the entire ordeal, Alma started to take out all the ties and fingercomb it all flat again. Kanda waited for her to tie it up the way it ought to be, too, but instead, Alma tilted her head back and smiled, upside down and straight into her face. "I like it best like this. You've always had such nice hair, Yuki."

Kanda scowled and jerked out of Alma's hands, reaching for a tie and setting it in its usual ponytail while pointedly ignoring the complaints raining from behind about how Alma wanted to do it. "You moved too slow, get over it. I'm done here."

"I'm glad you still keep it long," Apparently, for all her reading, Alma never learned the meaning of done, so Kanda got up to leave and make it a little clearer. Which didn't work, since Alma just took it as a sign to follow.

"It doesn't matter."

"It does! You're always so indelicate, like you're really trying not to be pretty, even though you're really beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if you just decided to hack it off as a part of that, though, you know, Yuki? So I'm glad you don't."

"Just because we were women in our past lives doesn't mean you should still act so much like one now," Kanda shot back, eyes narrow but kept forward.

"It's not the same as reincarnation. We're the same people." And then, before Kanda could cut her off, "Besides, even if Yuki had been a man then and was really a man now, you'd still be beautiful, so I don't see why I can't say so."

"Shut up before I beat you into a wall." And Kanda very pointedly did not look back to see Alma's expression, because she got the feeling Alma would just look touched to have gotten a warning at all.
