I am the Muse.
I am the tap on the shoulder
the lightbulb over your head.
I am the spark, the magnet,
the guiding force.
I gave Harry his letter
and gave Frodo the Ring.
I gave Boo Radley the push outside
and sent Rosalind into the forest.
Sondheim was nothing,
Shakespeare? A joke--
It's me.
I am the muse.
I am the one who picks you up
Who turns that canvas into a masterpiece
Who spins you a story
so epic and glorious and true
That you think it will never end
never, never, and you'll go on
Writing, reading, breathing, singing,
And you ask me
My muse, will you leave me,
Will my inspiration end?
And I do not answer.
But the empty pages
Will tell you:
Yes.
