Does Anyone Still Read the Newspaper?

When I was a high school student, I had a subscription to the Boston Globe newspaper. I think it did a great job for my English comprehension, in addition to learning about a whole new world outside of my little suburban town outside of Boston ( Read more... )

I agree with you in that the newspapers need to learn how to compete with online media, but even online media has turned me off. I used to read CNN.com, but some of their articles on Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and the whole iReport.com really bugs me. That's not news - that's tabloids.

You make a good point about watching news on t.v., I rarely watch t.v. these days so I should make an effort to turn on the 10 or 11 PM news. Thanks for reminding me! Though, I wish I had a good print newspaper to read, especially during lunch or other times where I am not near a t.v. screen.

Happy New Year! Hope you two are doing well.

When we moved to Champaign we started getting the local News Gazette on the weekends (Fri-Sun). Turns out we only really read it on Sunday (and sometimes Saturday) and then we only really read the Life section (with Dear Abby, the Saturday House, and some other random columns). I don't know about the writing quality in terms of how it compares to this paper 10 years ago... but it was pretty much what I would expect from a small town paper.

At any rate... we read so little of the paper that we decided we couldn't justify the waste it was generating... so we stopped subscribing. We sometimes miss it when we're lounging around on the weekend, but most times not.

I used to read the Boston Globe cover-to-cover, but now-a-days I can't bear to read some of the articles or the style of writing just gets to me and I can't continue.

In grad school I used to subscribe to the Raleigh News & Observer, but as school got busier the only thing I did was the crossword puzzles at lunch. It wasn't worth it - it's much cheaper to print them out online.

I subscribe to the Financial Times, a British newspaper. I read it on the Metro every morning. I also skim the New York Times and the Washington Post on the Internet each day. When I travel I'll often pick up whatever passes for the local paper, and most of them are shockingly poor in quality nowadays.

I agree with the shockingly poor quality in the content and the writing style in local newspapers too. I'd like to support these newspapers (e.g., Boston Globe), but not if I have to read something equivalent to tabloid trash.
