I've read so much fic in the past couple months that I decided I should do something useful with it.
Firstly, a list of authors I adore:
Next, a list of my absolute favourites:
- The Shoebox Project by ladyjaida & dorkorific
God, what is there to say about Shoebox that hasn't been said? It's a must-read fic, whether you're invested in the fandom/pairing or not. It's where this whole thing started for me. It's hilarious; the characters and relationships are fantastic. Of course, it takes a turn for the darker at the end, as Marauders fic is wont to. Obviously, I do still wish it was finished. Just - read it. End of. - consequences too immeasurable to count by thissugarcane
There's something so realistic about this series, from their relationships, to how the first war affects Hogwarts. It has one of my favourite versions of the Prank, even if it was later Jossed. And it has an awesome AU ending involving time-travel, which more of these fics should, really. - Leave The Children Behind by cevennes
Summary: Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is learn to let go of what you were, and fall in love with what you are. Remus, Sirius, and a series of choices. Or, a love story-backwards and forwards.
One of the best R/S fics I've read and one of the best things I've read all year, actually. The fact that HP fandom is still producing brilliant pieces like this is really not that surprising but brings a lot of joy to my soul. It's just devastating and beautiful and all you could want from a reunion fic. And Remus in this is so complex and broken and lovely. And Sirius - but I always have far too many feelings about Sirius, so I'll stop now. - Sing My Heart by anniesj
Summary: "Some people press their memories between pages of scrapbooks; others have fancy photographs that wave and dance. Sirius has music."
I love this one so much. Just, Sirius thinking about Remus alone at James and Lily's funeral (my heart), and There should always be music in Moony's house. It should be a law., and Sirius using music to remember, and "We were never meant to grow old, remember? Marauders forever, and all that rot. Like the Lost Boys in Never-Land, and now look at us." - An Alternate Lullaby by setissma
Even tiny mentions of Sirius and baby Harry just wreck me, and this, this is the worst, and the best, and the loveliest snippet from the loveliest AU, that feels so real, so earned, and it's not perfect - there's still a war and they've lost things and they've changed - but it's enough, it's all they need. - Do and Do Not by imochan
I'm a huge fan of really angsty post-Hogwarts fics. Where everyone is just on-edge and stressed and scared and suspicious. The scene with Remus and Lily in this is just so good. This is terrible and painful, but also right somehow, like it couldn't happen any other way. - The Dark Center of the Universe by anniesj
Post-Prank, and damn, it hurts. Sirius's just so utterly clueless and he doesn't get it, doesn't know that love can't fix everything, can't stop him from hurting the ones he loves, maybe makes it even worse. - Time is a Fine Invention by bluepeony
Summary: Sirius Black expected university to be simple; a medley of moonlight trysts and Good Times. What he didn't expect was the yearning for home, the strains on his friendships, or falling for the hot-tempered History student Remus Lupin.
Sirius in this is just my favourite. He's such a delightful, insecure, clueless asshole who just casually disregards other people's feelings and thinks he can take whatever he wants at the beginning. And seeing him slowly become self-aware over the course of the fic is a wonderful thing. I love his obsession with films and how much he wants life to be like one, to be easy, and how Remus disarms him of that notion. I love his relationship with James and the Potters. I love how fragile and lost he really is, how afraid he is of not being enough. /end Sirius feelings - The Drought Story by librae
- A Holiday of Sorts by kabeyk
I just love how awkward and confusing and claustrophobic this is. Sirius resenting him for not being James, and not knowing how to be alone with him or what to do with all the tension that's still there after the Prank. It's terribly realistic, the way they don't really talk about it, but somehow come to a place where it's okay. - Oscar Wilde Would Not Approve by librae
This is so lovely. Sirius getting kind of obsessed with doing nice things for Remus is so in-character to me (and Lily is a darling too). And it makes so much sense that they'd communicate in gestures instead of words, like Remus giving him the key, and it's enough for them. - Within White Space by mustntgetmy
Summary: Non-magic AU. Remus spends his all his lunch breaks the same way: he sits at the university cafe, orders the cheapest thing on the menu, and stares at Sirius. Getting a good long, look at Sirius (and fantasizing about said look) is all Remus expects from Sirius. But Sirius has never been one for fulfilling expectations.
This kind of broke me. Remus so sad and isolated and Sirius just being Sirius and not giving a damn and just loving so openly and easily. I love how comfortable they are with each other, especially at the end, and how well they just fit. - Absurd Joy by falling_voices
This is so gorgeous and they're such ridiculous, oblivious boys. - you say that I treat you like a book on the shelf by penknife
- Quotation by ladyjaida
- Of Cinema and Sticky Notes by bluepeony
Summary: Remus Lupin is the office bore. Sirius Black is the office sweetheart. They fancy each other, on a purely aesthetic level. - Our Blood, Still Young by templeg
- Children Who Come From Good Homes by mywholecry
Summary: The band's been around in one way or another since they were fourteen, and they met Remus, who could play the drums. James and Sirius were both taking guitar lessons because they never did anything apart, and Peter took up bass because it was what was left over. It's been the most constant thing in Sirius' life since he was a kid and still believed in his parents.
Ah, this stings. Sirius thinking that Remus doesn't believe in the band, in him, and being so selfish with him. Remus not being able to get over him. It's painful and tumultuous and kind of unhealthy and so real. - Horoscopes and how they caused the Plague of Frogs by woldy
Summary: This is the story of the most improbable job Remus ever had, the Chocolate Frog Plague of 1980 and, incidentally, how he first kissed Sirius.
This is such a sweet, refreshing story. - Adagio by lupinely
Summary: They never said “I love you.” - Logical Deduction by kaydeefalls
Summary: Remus is never not here in the morning when Sirius needs him to clarify The Mystery Of What The Fuck Happened Last Night. - The Morning After by rosemaryandrue
Summary: After a drunken encounter, Sirius panics that Remus can't possibly really fancy him. - Home by xylodemon
Summary: One week became two weeks became three weeks became a month. - no one ever said it would be this hard by throughadoor
- Three Days (The Rebuilding the Temple Remix) by musesfool
- Fly by ignipes
Summary: Sirius has always loved to fly. Seven scenes from his life and one from his afterlife. - The Moon's Significant Tremble by setissma
Summary: An AU wherein Remus is a teacher, Sirius is a banker, and they meet on a train. - Ocean Above & Sky Below by grandilloquism
Summary: Sirius, adrift and floundering at the advanced age of 23, rents out a mansion by the sea- as you do- in an effort to recapture his happiness. It works surprisingly well.
Such a great depiction of Sirius and his relationship with his family. And him buying Remus pianos! So great. - Now by youcantseeus
Summary: Sirius’s efforts to save Remus from himself might just involve moving in, raising Teddy, living Muggle, and taking a cooking class for couples. Meanwhile, Remus is quite sure that he isn’t gay, he’s not in love with Sirius, and he doesn’t need help with anything. - a flame in two cupped hands by such_heights
Sirius' pining actually hurts in this. So beautiful. - Let Nothing You Dismay by cevennes
Summary: There are a few things Sirius really didn't count on for Christmas of 1979. The extreme sexual confusion is one of them; Remus Lupin is approximately seventy-eight of the rest.
