Self revelations

I wrote the following in response to buymeaclue's post over on horsemanship about the methods we use to train / prepare our horses (natural horsemanship, clicker training, groundwork, classical methods) and if we feel its been a successful approach or not, and what our goals are for the future:

my long response )

I can sympathize. As I said on the horsemanship post, I felt like I was floundering for similar reasons with Gypsy. And I simply *couldn't* find ANY trainer around here willing to take on a mustang. It was me or nobody ( ... )

Thank you, that's exactly what I needed to hear. Now, off to the barn!

Remind me again how old Sage is now?

he turned 6 this spring...was started under saddle last year as a five year old because the year before, when I wanted to start him and felt he was ready, I spent most of the year sick instead. :-(

So now he's 6, and I'm guessing he's had somewhere around 50 rides.

Cool, that's about what I thought. Here's the thing. You may (probably?) already know this, but just in case not ( ... )

I have heard that before, and it's something my instructor has mentioned. Last year he showed few signs of it...but this year!!! I do think that might be part of what is going on, and its good to hear someone else say that too, outside my instructor. Probably adding that to the fact that he was gelded late and now has a mare is just double trouble huh ( ... )

Why does it have to be black and white ( ... )

No, I absolutely agree with you and that's so much of what I've been frustrated by. Part of it is that Sage wasn't under saddle so we did groundwork. But lack of money, and my own health has really slowed us down and I feel like that's affected Sage. He's the kind of horse that would just *love* to have an owner who could spend hours with him every day, and he *really* likes having a job, and a human to take care of. He's great with kids ( ... )

I should add that I think if I had someone more supportive of the parelli program to give me some supervision...that I think it would help me incorporate both my own intuition and the rules of the parelli program. But yeah, I think you're right that I need to find some way of being more in tune with my horse again...

Do you think you could find enough people to get together a regular clinic group if you organised yourself? Get someone like Tim Hayes over? He's done clinics quite nearby from what I can tell and if you can get a few people together you could maybe form more of a local community to support one another.

Well, there's two different groups that do "Parelli Days." One of those groups was supposed to host a parelli clinic in late august but it got canceled.

The parelli days themselves help...but they happen at best about once a month. Since we recently got a trailer, we are headed to our first parelli day off our property on august second. Exciting!

Part of the issue continues to be paying the $500 a pop that a parelli clinic costs. Again, once I'm done college I am hoping that will be more affordable (tho with student loans, who knows, right?). I'll look up Tim Hayes...never heard of him before...

Hey, I just emailed Tim Hayes to see about upcoming clinics...
He looks amazing, and thanks for the suggestion. Its nice to see his more affordable prices!

I was sure you pointed him out to me originally. Must have been someone else I guess. I know hes in the Eclectic Horseman listings in the magazine anyways. Perhaps worth looking on their forum to see if there is anyone much local to you, they seem like an interesting place.

:-) Thank you for the encouragement - it's appreciated!

I think maybe soon I will "break through" this stuff and know it well enough to feel comfortable combining it in certain ways. I suppose I already do in the round pen when I use circle game/ join up...I hope you're right and he recovers. I think he will if I provide him with some consistency from here on out...I just think the lack of consistency so far has been not helpful to him, and so its important I don't do any more bouncing around...he seems like he needs really clear boundaries right now...
