You Can't Be Told It's Nothing Special

I've been really stoked on this Nike+ running thing lately. I just bought a pair of running shoes with the SportBand kit at the Finish Line (last time I shopped there: 1999) and fired up my first run yesterday. I finished a mile and uploaded the info on my online Nike+ account, and it's very accurate. There was a huge drop in speed when I turned ( Read more... )

Be careful with the running thing. You will hurt yourself if you do too much, too soon. Over two or so months, I worked up to running 30 miles a week. My last two days of "real" running, I did 7 miles each day, and that was the point of no return. My knees were fucked up (I had experienced some pain over the prior 6 months), and I haven't been able to really run since then. I'm trying to do a couple miles a few times a week, but I'm afraid to do much more. YOU NEED TO REST. I think my downfall was running 5 or 6 days a week. I would suggest you not running consecutive days, unless you were to run one morning and the next day at night. If you body can't recuperate, it won't be able to withstand the pressure of running ( ... )

Perhaps, by discussing how I haven't really "worked out" since high school, I misconstrued how active I really am. My job has me going for 50 hours a week and while much of that time is literally spent driving (which requires its own set of physical/mental endurance), I am also lifting/pushing/pulling patients wherever I go, several times a day. I suppose, then, that I'm not so much concerned with my joints and muscles as I am with my heart and lungs being able to hack it. The two runs I've done so far were both under ten minutes and I walked a bit before and after each.

I am taking your comment under serious consideration, but I think I will be okay if I continue with my goals.
