Planes sitting on the ramp without a gate happen A LOT, unfortunetly. My favorite is when they are ready to take off, and ATC shuts down their departure due to weather. I've had planes sit out there for 3 hours before, having to return periodically for fuel :(

PS you have to fly into my super cool awesome airport of doom next time, it's closer and a much easier drive!
