Shore Leave 29 Recap

Jul 16, 2007 11:39

Well, jackette beat me to the first wrap-up, but here is my (not quite so) brief and squee-ful recap.

Friday: We arrived late afternoon, got all settled in and registered and everything, grabbed some dinner, and then returned in time to see Gary Jones (SG-1) and Dean Haglund (X-Files, Lone Gunmen) perform their improv show Starhole: 1.5, which I've already talked a little about. Seriously, I laughed harder than I have in a really, really long time, and Stargate has never been one of my shows (though jackette is trying to convert me). Gary and Dean were just priceless and their use of volunteers was particularly well done. Didn't hurt that Colin Cunningham (SG-1) happened to also be in the audience (he came down to watch) and Dean pulled him up on to stage.

Saturday: Normally at a con, I go to a bunch of discussion panels because I love talking about the shows. This time I spent almost the whole day listening to the actors talk. I went to my prerequisite Boogie Knights concert, which unfortunately ran long and forced Claudia Christian (Babylon 5) to come out playing a tamborine to sort of kick them off. It also meant that her talk was shorter than it probably should have been. But she was quite entertaining.

Then came the primary reason I was there: Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek: The Original Series). My god, people, she's amazing. She was gracious and wonderful and told some highly entertaining stories about getting the part of Lt. Uhura and naming her and Gene Roddenberry, and yay. She answered some questions from the audience, and I was just so impressed with her.

I also sat through Colin Cunningham and Paul McGillon's (SG:A) talks, even though I don't really know who they are. But they were both wonderful and entertaining (and very sexy) and I enjoyed myself. Then it was standing in line for autographs. I mostly wanted Nichelle's and it was such an honor to get to speak to her and have her sign a photo for me. I got the others that were being offered so we can auction them off at Tribal Forces next year.

What time was left was really just hanging out with jackette and gomeisa neelie and friends and walking around the dealer's room and having dinner.

Sunday: Got up and loaded up the car, had something to eat, and then I wanted to see Dean Haglund's talk. He's very funny and towards the end Gary Jones joined him. The two of them together... god I could just watch that all day. Then Gary and Colin talked, which was also quite fun. The three of us did one more trip around the dealer's floor and then headed back.

Swag: Picked up a "Can't Stop the Signal" t-shirt, a tribble, several buttons ("There are two types of style manual: those that mandate serial commas, and those that are evil and wrong."; "The less you bother me, the sooner you'll get results"; "It's you and me against the world. We attack AFTER coffee."; "Don't make me get the flying monkeys"; and a couple more that are gifts for people), a Dean Winchester button, a Dean Winchester key chain, several photographs (behind the scenes and headshots for signing), a Numb3rs key chain, and a Numb3rs slash story zine.

All in all it was just a fantastic weekend spent with friends and other people like me. :D
