So I've been following the casting for the Dark Tower on and off. The most recent news of Javier Bardem as a pretty near lock for Roland makes me happy, I think he would make a pretty awesome Roland. The chatter around some of the rest of the cast though...really? Zoe Saldana being suggested for Susanna? I just can't see it. I like Zoe, but she's waif thin and even as Uhura she didn't really pull off the ultra HBIC I can go crazy on yo ass at any moment but here, let me make y'all some tea sweetness that she'll need to play Odetta/Detta/Susanna. You know who could though? This lady:
Gina Torres. She can do bad ass with her shit together, but she can also do crazy. Look at the differences between her performances in Firefly, Angel and 24. And King points out several times that Susanna isn't waif-thin, like most of the actresses who have been suggested for the role so far.
When I think of Susanna, the image that comes to mind is the original cover of Wolves of Calla. Of Susanna in her chair, practicing with her metal discs, the muscles in her arms and back standing out clearly, looking fierce.
And if there is someone who doesn't even need to stand to be able to portray the raw intensity of anger and feeling that Susannah embodies, that person is my girl Gina.
Next up we have Eddie. I'm kind of surprised by the suggestions for him from other fans actually. JGL, really? Unlike some other people, I think he's got the acting chops for it, actually. After watching Brick and The Lookout, he's definitely got the range and ability to do the dark necessary for a heroin addict. And we all know I have no shortage of love for him, but my biggest issue is that he looks so young (even if he is actually 30). I suppose this is actually my issue most of the casting suggestions for Roland's ka-tet. I always imagined them a bit older than people who looked barely out of their teens (like Zoe). Jack Mort pushed Odetta in front of the train when she was early 20s and it was a minimum of three years (more I think though) before Roland pulled her into Midworld.
So I complain about JGL looking too young and the actor I end up picking (according to IMDB) is actually younger than him. (Let's be honest, in addition to abusing parenthesis here, I'd be totes OK with JGL playing Eddie.) Whoops? He doesn't really have the baby face though. I present, Rupert Friend:
As you can see, he can pull of the heroin addict look quite well but also cleans up very nice. So he can do both stages of Eddie fantastically.
I'm curious on your thoughts? I completely forgot I'd started this post last week, so I'm throwing it out there for who you'd cast for other people. Walter? The Crimson King? Jake? Roland's original Ka-tet? Susan Delgado? The train? :D
