“The only difference between the two parties is marketing,” said Adam Jung, a youth organizer who was interviewed during the Rage concert in Denver. “Electing Democrats to end the war is like drinking light beer to lose weight.”

As far as I know, though, the Democrats are a much safer option than the Republicans when it comes to reasonably progressive social politics.

you'd be surprised. keep in mind that it was the Southern Democrats that set the stage for the segregationalist policies after the Civil War, that it was the Republicans that voted far more heavily in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 than did the Democrats (80% in favor for the Republicans, 61% for the Democrats in the House and 82 versus 69 in the Senate), that one of the big strongholds of the Democratic party is pro-choice plank which the biggest proponent of that (planned parenthood) both in its founding and in recent scandals has affirmed that it is intended to and is willing to suppress the black population through abortions.

When you peel away the layers, the Democrats really aren't the poster child for social progression as they claim to be, particularly not in civil rights.

Perhaps Adam Jung should post an addendum to his comments, seeing as while the presidential election and the olympics have been keeping everyone occupied, the war in Iraq has been quietly drawing to an end. Some of the things that have been largely ignored is how the US has quietly started negotiating troop withdrawels since the troops are no longer needed as much (to the point where Petraes has advocated even more withdrawels than simply pulling back from the troop surge), the casualties have been reduced drastically, and the Iraqi government and military are becoming more stable and as a result more able to manage the country without as much reliance on the US military.

I don't think the point of what he said was explicitly a need to end the war. It's drawing on the platform of the Democratic candidate. Senator Obama has said he would pull troops out of Iraq and redeploy them to Afghanistan. If you believe he's going to quickly pull troops from Iraq and end the war, you are probably being duped.
