I have no idea what's appropriate

As I meandered through my kitchen this morning, I noticed the light blinking on the answering machine. Under normal circumstances, that light just means that a telemarketer hung up- not today. A message from my aunt saying that my father is in the hospital for pancreatitis and that they don't know how long he'll be there or what is going to happen
