I met John (the libelous author) today at Okazaki city hall where we went in a group to apply for our Alien Registration Cards. On my way home - innocently and angelically minding my own business - I encountered him again when he fell off his bike

I merely laughed so that you could enjoy the sound in stereo (since Marina-san was laughing too). Otherwise you would have been forced to endure mono which may have had a detrimental effect on your already fragile balance.
