So that thing I talked about last time, about driving myself mad as a full-time writer. I got a case of it right now. Supposed to do a revision of a piece I'm writing for this blog, and I didn't like the way it came out on first draft and there were a couple of holes in my research, so I just have to do some quick Googling/Lexis-ing, plug a few ( Read more... )

Tara, this I have this problem so much worse than you. The deadline is 11:00. You will do it by then. I will call you then to make sure it is done. You will be fine.

Thanks, but you didn't call. ;)

I did finish something and sent it in, but I feel kind of stupid doing so this late. Better now than tomorrow, I guess....

ANDDDD... I apparently attached it in a weird format she couldn't read, so I sent it again this morning, and I didn't realize for a half-hour that it was sent back to MYSELF. Ugh. This isn't my weekend at all.

These things happen. You can't both care about the quality of the work and then churn stuff out on demand: it's one or the other, and in these situations you have to choose done over good.

My understanding is that full-time writers switch to other projects when things get difficult or they're having unproductive stretches. Or become alcoholics. I suggest the former.

Pick up Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird. It made me feel better about myself as a writer and as a human being, and I make my students read it every semester, too.

Bird by Bird is a good one. Anne Lamott's a really quick read, too.
