Burnin' the midnight oil

I've heard and used the phrase many times, without knowing the precise definition, so I looked it up in an idiom dictionary. I can't say exactly why it's funny to me, but I laughed heartily when I read the definition, especially the last example ( Read more... )

I popped in Cold Mountain a bit ago, only to realize that I HAVE SEEN IT before. Shit. What an unfortunate blunder. However, it's a good flick, and I still have my wine. Cheers.

Just finished the movie, and after watching it I realize that (1) Although I have rented it before, I'd only seen the first 20 minutes or so before falling asleep, and thus the majority of the movie was a first-time viewing experience; and (2) It is indeed a good flick. Is the fact that I've commented on my own entry twice vain and egotistical? The wine is almost done and the sun is almost up -- I'm going to sleep.

Doesn't the "burning the midnight oil" phrase have to do with Chanukah?
