One of the first comments really Struck Home for me: I lost many of my dearest friends and I still am as mad as hell that they were taken from me and I get to enter the "Golden Years" without their love, laughter and support.
As I was saying to our roomie the other morning, in the mid-to-late 80's I was part of a social circle in Atlanta of around 30 gay men. There are only two of us alive today, and I'm the only one out of the entire group to have ended up HIV-negative a quarter-century later.
In addition to the sobering fact that I'm likely still alive only because I was Too Fat/Ugly/Unfashionable/Whatever To Fuck back then, there's the fact that the current generation has never been in the maelstrom of loss. I'm about to go thru my late middle-ages without those who should have come before me. I don't want the generations following me to have to experience what I'm going thru.
