Re-adding you, then! Is the whole lj-not-letting-us-keep-you-friended thing standard, or is it one of those options you can choose? Seems like a bit of a hassle to run around asking everyone to add you back, but maybe that's just my pathetic laziness talking.

Kinda both. You can choose to remove friends-of, but I'd (incorrectly) assumed that mutual friends would be kept, aha.
