What a wonderful treat to top off a weekend of overindulgence! I love how you pack each and every phrase with so much color and weight and feeling:
a book like a paving stone, and she opened it in her hands, the words rushing up, and pressed her face deep into the gutter between the pages and inhaled as if she had not breathed all day, and the hurt, the hurt, the hurt.
In your alterna-verse, we still get a grieving Scully, down on her knees, unable to accept separation from Mulder.
I am in awe of how that last line so beautifully echoes her earlier erotic yearning:
the way she wanted Mulder like a hot, ticking time bomb packed with plastic explosives and rusty nails and the wretched fuse that just kept burning and burning and burning.
And that was so much of what they were about, wasn't it? Grieving and yearning.
You're a gem. Whatever was in the air, I hope it comes back.
I almost never read XF fic anymore and can't remember when I last saw an episode, but two sentences into this story, and I was not only right back there, I knew exactly where we were in the series. The space XF fills in my head? Apparently full FOREVER.
