Canon Character and Series: Lingreed/ Fullmetal Alchemist
In-Game Name: Ling Yao
Age: Ling is 19, Greed is only 4 (As of April 12th)
Gender: Male
Position & Ship (first and second choice for position please): Cabin Boy of the 4423
Appearance: Roughly about 5’9’’ to 5’11’’ Greed stands at a fair height for his ‘age’. Though his body is eighteen, his face oddly looks several years past that and he can easily pass for someone at least in his mid-twenties. His hair is thick and well past his shoulder blades, but always kept back in a pony tail. His eyes, often partially obstructed by his long bangs, are very narrow, and sometimes can appear to be shut. When he does open his eyes wide enough, they give off a brilliant violet color, along with slited pupils. This alone gives off a pretty intimidating appearance. Add that in with that frightening grin of his, lined with almost shark-like teeth and its no small wonder he’s able to boss around others so well.
For the usual clothes Greed wears, he likes it simple with a large coat, dress pants, and a tight shirt. He’s not one to get terribly dirty, so he’s able to get away with a nice look.
For Ling, most of the above follows save for the terrifying teeth and eyes. He has a far gentler look to him. His eyes are a light brown, and he’s more prone to smile than frown, unlike his counterpart. He also dresses for more casually, opting to wear something loose and easy to move in.
Personality: Greed isn’t just called Greed because it sounds cool. He embodies the very essence of the word. Greed is selfish and self serving. He’s out for himself and is on an ongoing quest to attain everything in the world. He’s confident and cocky, and is definitely able to back himself up, hence putting him at a fairly high position on his ship, the 4423. Although even with that position, he still acts fairly laid back, only tensing when the situation is dire.
Let it be said that Greed is an asshole, but that doesn’t mean he’s unnecessarily cruel. He does have principles and as long as you don’t cross him, you’ll be treated fairly by him. In addition, he follows two guidelines that he never breaks. He doesn’t lie, and he doesn’t hurt women. The reasoning behind these are unknown; you won’t get an answer out of him. Another thing you won’t get out of him is why he carries around and protects a sword that he never uses. The sword itself looks very expensive and well made, but it never leaves it’s sheathe. And when you get to close, Greed tends to get defensive.
On the off chance that the original owner of the body is in control, you’ll find Ling Yao to be a pretty different person. He’s quirky and considerably easier to get along with than Greed. He seems optimistic, though slightly humbled by the harshness that’s been his punishment over the last several years.
In mannerisms, he’s a bit strange. By looking at him you would guess his family had been wealthy snobs. He has no problems getting free meals when offered. He’s also been known to be imposing, though more so when he was younger than now. Despite all that, Ling means the best. He’s a compassionate individual and values those close to him greatly.
In all seriousness, Ling is an extremely driven individual. Once he sets his mind on something, he fights for it until the bitter end. Along with this, Ling is also reckless. If he finds an opening or a lead for what he wants, he’ll throw himself in and deal with consequences later. This is another thing that’s been dampened slightly by his age, but is still there nonetheless. Getting in the way of him when he’s like that is the last thing you want to do.
Abilities/Weapons: Greed’s anything but human, and some of his strange properties have translated themselves into Ling’s human body. One of the more interesting things is the ability to change composition of his skin into a very dense material. In this state, his skin is impenetrable so long as his focus is held to keeping it up. This is usually what Greed uses to fight when he’s forced to.
Ling’s body as a whole, is very in shape, so regardless of who’s in control, there’s a good chance you’ll get your ass handed to you. With Ling in control, you’re more likely to be hit with a flying kick or the blade of a sword, however. Also while Ling is in control, he still has the ability to use Greed’s Shield. It’s just a matter of him knowing he can, knowing how to use it, and even wanting to at all.
Weaknesses: Greed’s biggest weakness is that his existence is tied to the safety of the sword he carries around. The sword, a dao, is the last physical item in Ling’s possession, and as such, is the item which he is sealed in. If it was ever completely broken, Ling would easily be able to reclaim his body. Cracking it would cause temporary windows of opportunity.
Another weakness, that could be taken advantage of, is his unwillingness to hurt women or lie. That doesn’t mean it won’t piss him off and make him get back at someone via some kind of loophole.
For Ling, sometimes his ambitious nature and recklessness can get the better of him. The whole reason he was trapped in Greed for almost four years was because of this, after all. Sometimes he’ll lose his head in the excitement of pursuing his goals.
Speaking of being trapped, Ling suffered a great emotional ordeal. He may be still mentally intact, but what happened to him will take some time to overcome. He’s going to be piecing his life back together the best he can. Until then, he may be slightly more vulnerable than he was several years ago.
History: The charming face you see Greed with, as well as the fit, ninja-trained body, is not truly his possession, despite what he says. The original owner to that body is a boy named Ling Yao.
Ling came from a wealthy and a very big family in Solare, Ivona (One of the few left there anyway). He wasn’t the oldest, or the youngest, but we’ll at least say he was somewhere within reasonable standing for inheritance. Growing up, Ling lived with a moderate peace with his family. He barely knew his parents, and he and his siblings were rather raised by caregivers.
Now it was a little known fact that Ling’s family, the Yao family, were active in their city. What isn’t in the newspapers is that they help fund the organized crime going on underneath most of the city’s nose. While this is something Ling and his siblings grew up knowing, it always left a bad taste in Ling’s mouth.
When his father suddenly fell ill with a discernable sickness, the doctors predicted a short amount of time was left for him. Suddenly, the siblings realized the question of the inheritance. Ling knew that if he were to gain it, he could change the direction his family was going in and bring back true honor to his family name.
He figured that if he could show his father the symbol of immortality, it would be enough to gain his favor. With that in mind, Ling set out for the mana crystals, one called the ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ in particular.
Ling traveled across the country, searching for any leads he could. Eventually he bumped into the Elric brothers, who after quite an impression, pointed him in the direction of Melior and their childhood friend, Winry.
Winry, by some luck, saved him from starvation one day after she tripped over his unconscious form lying in the streets. The two became fast friends and Ling ended up staying several weeks longer in Melior for ‘research’ than he’d originally anticipated. It was with a heavy heart and a great deal of reluctance that he finally made up his mind to keep moving. He had goals after all.
Not long after saying good bye to Winry, Ling picked up on a promising lead and threw himself back into his search. He chased after it for a few years slowly losing himself to his ambitions until he finally tracked down what he was looking for.
The stone, though large like the Philosopher’s Stone, wasn’t the stone at all. It was also owned by someone already. However, by this point, Ling had become so obsessed with finding the stone, that he recklessly through himself at this opportunity. He broke into the home of the stone’s owner.
The plan did not go through. The owner of the stone, an elderly man well-versed in magic, used the stone against him, placing him under a curse.
As punishment, Ling lost his body to a dark spiritual being known as Greed. Greed assumed complete control while sealing away Ling inside his own sword, the last real thing the boy still owned. Ling was fifteen when it happened.
Over the next four years Greed traveled about on his own after leaving the mage that had conjured him. The guy was stuffy and he had a thing for trying to tell him what to do. Greed gave him the metaphorical finger and left with the mage’s money and alcohol.
While he was in Vohemar, he decided to sign up for a ship. He was getting a little bored just running around on his own, and he figured he could work his way up the latter to running it himself. It was a small step in his conquest over the world.
Easily hitting the position of Quartermaster, Greed spent a good year and a half on this ship, enjoying everything about being a pirate. You know, aside from the occasional incidents where the world used the ship as their toilet. Dare he say it, but he found himself attached.
He really had no idea that a few of his more trusted co-workers were plotting his downfall behind his back.
