Oh, the leftovers!

We had an okay Thanksgiving--me, Norm, Melissa (aka Primula) and my mother. Based on past experience, we avoided a few pitfalls, such as leaving my husband to entertain my mother on his own. He felt uncomfortable about having to initiate all the conversation, and how she just sits with a blank look on her face much of the time. (Welcome to my ( Read more... )

Have you tried the local ASPCA or doggy shelter to adopt? We are fostering a dog for a bit. Pound dogs make really lovely pets, and there is such a need for adoptive families..

Glad Thanksgiving was good.

It's the German Shepherd thing--not to malign other breeds, or mixed breed dogs, but once you have a GSD, many people feel, there's no going back. And German Shepherd Rescue of New England, which takes in almost all the GSDs turned in to the animal shelters, is adamantly against Invisible Fence.

My other misgiving is that if a rescued dog has major issues (which in a GSD can be very dangerous), I'm not confident enough as a dog trainer to take that on, and fix other people's mistakes. But I do troll on PetFinder from time to time. If the right dog turned up...

I agree with 9ff. Shelters & rescue groups, especially in this economy, are a great option. Many animals are being displaced by families that have been foreclosed on or who just can't afford them anymore so there should hopefully be a number of animals without major issues out there now.

I'm also voting for the greyhound. Twinkle is such a sweetheart!

I was on Petfinder not too long ago, and there are some strong possiblities. But--when I checked out one shelter's entire list of available pets--OMG! there are eight or nine cats for every dog needing a home! Unbelievable!!
And most shelters on Petfinder do seem to try hard to let you know what (if any) issues a dog has.
