Summary: Ironically, a heart gets in the way of Woohyun and Sunggyu's love.

As Sunggyu lies down on the mattress and hums to himself, he smiles into the darkness.

The cracked light of the moon filters in through his window, and Sunggyu only continues humming. He traces the hasty arm thrown around his torso with his fingertips - in patterns meant to tickle, but the owner is too deep in his sleep to notice.

Woohyun with the golden brown hair, Woohyun with the honey eyes, Woohyun with the silly laugh. Woohyun with his arm thrown around Sunggyu. Woohyun, Woohyun, Woohyun.

Sunggyu is almost afraid to break him as he leans down to kiss his forehead.

Woohyun smiles a little, and Sunggyu deems his heart useless with its erratic beats and irregular thrumming.

(Then he remembers that it exists for him to love Woohyun.

He falls asleep with a song in his throat and Woohyun in his mind.)

-

As Woohyun wakes up to the pillows denting beneath his feet, he smiles at the light.

The early rays of dawn glint off the mirror in their room, and Woohyun snuggles into a very familiar chest. He inhales the scent wafting from his clothes - all smooth and summer and very much like Sunggyu.

Woohyun doesn’t know where to begin describing Sunggyu. Sunggyu, Sunggyu, Sunggyu.

He’s too beautiful, and Woohyun thinks he deserves so, so much better.

Woohyun feels Sunggyu run his hand down Woohyun’s arm, brushing against the lines of his palm. Woohyun interlaces his fingers with Sunggyu’s, filling the spaces in between.

Woohyun realizes he doesn’t need to worry, after all.

He presses his ear against the other’s chest and wills himself to fall asleep once more.

(It’s a little bit soft, Sunggyu’s heartbeat, but Woohyun knows it’s beating strong. For him.

Sunggyu told him so.)

-

Sunggyu feels so physically tired, like the very air he breathes is being punched out of his lungs, again and again, until he’s left coughing and wheezing. His legs feel like jelly and his head is spinning and he feels like he just ran a marathon without stopping.

Sunggyu has had Woohyun rush to him countless times, supporting him with a strong arm around his waist, holding him up.

Sunggyu likes to smooth out the crease lines on Woohyun’s forehead and pretend that he’s okay, just a bit winded out - he hates making his Woohyun worry.

Well, Sunggyu is  okay - he has Woohyun, and Woohyun is all Sunggyu needs.

(The drumming of his heart is irregular yet again, but Sunggyu only convinces himself that it’s because of Woohyun’s presence.)

-

Woohyun watches Sunggyu as he sings with a voice Woohyun has loved the first time he ever heard it. His own personal lullaby. Woohyun has claimed it from the start.

Something foreign drifts through the air, and Woohyun recognizes it as silence. Woohyun doesn't like silence. Not from Sunggyu.

Woohyun hears a thud and an ambulance siren and none of the things he wants to hear.
(Because Sunggyu is quiet, his chest is quiet, and this time, Woohyun’s heart is breaking.)

-

As Sunggyu lies down on the white hospital bed and hums to himself, he smiles at the figure in front of him.

Woohyun with the curled fingers, Woohyun with the dark bags under his eyes, Woohyun with the frown etched on his beautiful face.

Sunggyu wonders if he broke him.

Woohyun says nothing as he strokes Sunggyu’s cheeks and traces the other’s lips.

If I give you my heart, would you be all better? Woohyun eventually tells him.

Sunggyu chuckles and raps Woohyun lightly on the head. Idiot, you gave your heart to me ages ago.

Woohyun says nothing.

(Because Sunggyu is dying,

And Sunggyu is all Woohyun needs.)

-

Sunggyu watches as the people stream in and out of his room, a flurry of white coats and metal equipment. They tell him good news he didn’t even know he had to hope for. Sunggyu thinks that maybe Woohyun knew from the start.

Sunggyu watches as the people stream in and out of his room, none of them Woohyun.

(His heart beeps on the monitor, like a warning.

But Sunggyu is too deep in his sleep to notice.)

-

They tell him.

Woohyun with the golden brown hair and the honey eyes and the silly laugh. Woohyun whose arm isn’t around Sunggyu right now. Woohyun, Woohyun, Woohyun.

Sunggyu hears the beating in his chest, like waves of deafening claps. He doesn’t know why the audience in his heart is clapping - he doesn’t know if it’s for the survival of the living or for the honor of the dead.

But then, it doesn’t matter because he did break Woohyun.

Sunggyu hums but doesn’t smile into the darkness.
(Sunggyu thinks,

Can a new heart break so soon?)

-

As Sunggyu lies down on the mattress, he watches the stars twinkle next to the cracked light of a moon. He remembers that night when he kissed his forehead and held him close.
Woohyun with his soft fingertips, Woohyun who held him up, Woohyun who loved him. Woohyun, Woohyun, Woohyun.

Sunggyu only stares at the velvet dark of the night, subtle and satin and very much like Woohyun. Sunggyu remembers, and his heart hurts with the weight of memories.

He doesn’t want to remember.
-

It’s dawn, and Sunggyu lies awake, curling his toes against the pillows near his feet.

His heart is knocking against his ribs, strong but gentle, as if coaxing some sense into him. The way Woohyun always did. Woohyun, Woohyun, Woohyun.

The dim light filters in through their window, and Sunggyu smiles.

Sunggyu is tired of the painful memories, but it’s a new day.

Woohyun’s love beats through his chest.

(And that’s all Sunggyu needs as he finally falls asleep with Woohyun in his mind and with Woohyun’s heart.)
