The woods and the rivers are silent
And the waveless sea is at rest
In their caves the winds are at truce and peace
And in the dark night
The white moon creates lofty silence
And we keep hidden
The sweetnesses of our love
Let love not speak or breathe
Let kisses be soundless, and soundless my sighs
And we keep hidden
The sweetnesses of our love.

The blazing heat of day had cooled and darkened into a warm, fragrant night. The sky was midsummer blue-black, dotted with unfamiliar stars. The world was still.
Daniel lay sleeping as soundly as an archaeologist who's had a very busy day. His face was innocent: glasses tucked safely away, mouth slightly open, breathing slowly and deeply. One hand curled against his face, puffing out his cheeks.
The fresh breeze that had sustained them during the day had taken itself away, no longer needed. The trees that they had trekked through had ceased their susurrations, and stood dark against the sky, silent and impassive as Jaffa guards.
Teal'c was deep in kel'no'reem, still and calm, patient as stone. He was far distant, further and deeper than sleep took the humans, yet ready to return at a moment's notice. He breathed softly, almost unnoticeably.
The rough and rocky landscape they'd clambered over in the day was soothed by the moonlight that touched everything with a calm majesty. Even the river by which they had made camp seemed to have quietened in its endless tumble down towards the rocky cove and out to join the sea that stretched, silver and black, towards the horizon and beyond.
It was Jack's turn to watch over them. He was leaning back against the base of a tree, hidden from the moon by the shade of the branches. In his arms was Sam, her arms wrapped tightly around him, their bodies aligned, legs tangled. Their fevered kisses were as silent and breathless as the world around them.
Their camp was on the edge of the tree line. A few dozen yards away, the land fell away, and the river plummeted down to a misty basin. From there it journeyed on past rocky ground, which became pebbles and mud, which became grass, and then sand.
Jack's hand slid up until it was cradling Sam's face, fingers sinking deep into her hair, thumb brushing her cheek. The moonlight painted them in dramatic shades; eyes dark with passion, faces pale with excitement and fear and a sense of falling. Sam's hand came to rest on Jack's chest. Beneath her trembling fingers she could feel the pounding of his heart.
The sea wound sensuously around the coast, becalmed, silent and waiting. The white-painted waves lapped and sucked gently at the edges of the land. Distant cliffs stood black against the vast white moon.
Sam opened her eyes, and met Jack's darkened gaze.
The woods and the river were silent, and the moon held its breath.
