Avoid Earthlink if you can

Last year when A and I moved into our place, we signed up for a year's worth of DSL from Earthlink. It was cheaper than Verizon or Speakeasy, as we had had Verizon at the old house and "used up" the introductory offer. When I ordered the service from Earthlink, I told them I had a modem, and I didn't need a new one, but they shipped one anyway.

You can call your credit card and contest the charge. If you're billed for services you did not receive then your credit card company will get themselves reimbursed and won't make you pay.
