What Goes Around...

I figure that this is a perfectly apt subject for a post, especially considering the mood in the rest of the fandom right now thanks to the spoilers. You have to go look for them elsewhere on this journal - I don't want any accidents. For those of you who've read the spoilers, THIS IS A SPOILER FREE POST. Do not post them in the comments. For those ( Read more... )

That is one thing that has always bothered me about Eric, especially knowing his character himself experienced rape - that while he does give Sookie a lift out of Jackson, the first thing he has to say to her is not some condolence about her rape and attack, or even an explanation about vampire nature, but to accuse her of walking away when things get rough. He makes it quite clear there that his primary concern is not consoling her as Angel!Eric would do, but in sussing out how her reaction may affect him down the line. It seems difficult to read that and persist in thinking Eric only does good for Sookie. (Whether she should or does still want/love him in the face of what she's seen being a separate question ( ... )

Well, I don't mind myself too much that he doesn't do anything about Sookie's rape, or that he hedges his bets with "rocky". My real problem with the whole scenario is how Sookie is blamed for doing nothing about the rape when Bill's immediate boss did jackshit - and then it all gets put back on Sookie ( ... )

Even worse: Some men seem to think (or at least say) that they are now the ones being discriminated against. And yes, they can always find areas where this is true but these areas are so tiny compared to the huge areas where there is not equality (yet ( ... )

Heh - yes. There were a whole heap of those sentiments about men in the forums and blogs I went to. Thousands upon thousands of men who are literally thinking they've got it worse than women. I won't deny that there are legitimate men's issues, but they're rarely issues like women's are. Women need to fear violence from their partners, while men mostly need to fear violence at bars. Lot of men get their heads caved in by drunk men who are strangers.

No, we don't. And there's great fear that we'll do that. In fact, there's a lot of fear that serial killers will be the new "cool" guys - because they have tribute sites and such.

Oh yes - so many initiatives. I had this image as my desktop for a bit. I love all these sorts of things ( ... )

I don't know how you tolerate us in this fandom. I think I have decided to just pretend that everything I hear that is horrifying is just poorly executed satire ( ... )

It serves as a good reminder to me that while I read about rapists and murderers most of the livelong day, they're not the "bad" ones, with everyone else being "good". So I don't "otherise" them. Being on the openly misogynistic places wasn't good for the soul though ( ... )

I'll take numbers 3 and 6, Pat.

Now you've just made me think of what awesome adventures Sookie could have as part of the Jack and Lily private investigator team.

Sookie the telepath: stopping insurance fraud in it's tracks without waiting for 8 hours in a car!

Eh. I screwed myself by this process of elimination. Number 3 is this fandom, Number 6 is misogynists.

She could have some pretty awesome adventures if she worked with humans. And if she worked with rich humans, they could pay her well, and keep her secret. It would be the most dead boring job in the world, but so it is when you have to check vampire minutiae too.

Separate from my opinions about the last book-and I’m optimistic about it-I’m going to be left with a bad feeling knowing how horribly CH was treated in the end. And yeah, even sadder is that it is a reflection of the larger picture ( ... )

I'm looking forward to it. The spoilers make it sound like a wild ride. :D But yeah - the way they've spoken about her is gross.

Well that's I suppose a good thing and a bad thing. Good for not being called a slut, whereas floozy is more of the same. I'm not so much into the whole "reclaiming" shit with slut either - it originally applied to dirty housekeepers etc. Queer always had an alternate meaning that wasn't such an epithet.

I haven't, but I've got the issue of Hypatia open in another tab, so I'll give it a looksee when I'm finished. That sounds pretty fascinating - from the perspective of a WOC. I think it's far too easy to take a position that originates from toxic masculinity - where women are aggressive and nasty, when this is the same technique used against us all the time. I think it's really important to see things from inside the world of someone in particular before judging them too harshly. Particularly when the world is set up to judge women harshly all the time.

Oh, and not 7. That's another misogynist. :D
