On the vegan question: spare me. We *are* omnivores, actually, always have been. That doesn't mean you have to eat a rare side of beef every day, but there are some nutrients that we need that you *just can't get* from vegetable matter. We may not be hunter gatherers anymore, but the fact that we started that way sure makes a difference to what our bodies respond to as food.
One thing you can do eat *less* meat and buy organic, which has far less impact on the environment and means that the animals live peaceful lives and have humane deaths.
I also highly recommend Sally Fallon's book Nourishing Traditions, while I'm at it.
