Goodbye, Wise Girl (for Luke, Thalia)

Jun 15, 2011 20:25

The worst day of my life started as any other. I woke up, walked Mrs. O'Leary, and grabbed breakfast. The first moment I realized something was wrong was when Annabeth didn't show up. We always shared breakfast together, these days. That was unusual enough that I decided to check up on her, though I assumed that she was just probably working on ( Read more... )

Swinging the door open, there was a slightly confused expression on her face. She had the look of someone who had been up all night, which was normal given that she had been up all night. Looking down at Percy, she arched an eyebrow as she held the door steady with her foot.

"Yeah. What's up, Jackson?" she asked a little sharper than normal, but nothing that would edge towards mean. She mostly just wanted to go to bed. She really hoped he didn't want to share feelings or something like that. He should go knocking on someone else's door for that.

It took a minute for me to catch my breath, and to put my whirling thoughts back together. For an instant, I had no idea what to say to her. Then, finally, I said, "Have you seen Annabeth?"

A look of confusion crossed her face. Folding her arms against her chest, she shook her head in answer to his question. There was a dread-like feeling welling up from the pit of her stomach. Something wasn't quite right that was for certain.

"No," Thalia said warily, shaking her head slightly. "Why? Haven't you?"

I shook my head no. "She wasn't at breakfast," I said. "And she's not at her hut."

The noise of someone approaching coupled with her being on full alert caused Thalia to turn. Seeing Luke approach, she tightened her grip on her bow. It was a gesture that came without thinking, not so much a reaction to him but rather a reaction to the tension that was about to boil over. Clearing her throat, she didn't even bother to wait for Percy to notice. It was no use waiting for him to have a clear insight into what was happening.

Now was time for just going right ahead. It was for the best.

"We can't find Annabeth." There was no use beating around. Another minute and he would know as much. Better to fill him in and have him help look. "We're looking but we haven't had success. Have you seen her?"

I'm focused on looking around for Annabeth, that I don't notice Luke until Thalia speaks up. I look up, and glare. "What are you doing here?"
