If you can get there in person to apply, somewhere like the Bodleian Library or the British Library. Private membership costs money, and you have to prove need and provide a referee, but it's theoretically open to people researching, for just this kind of thing. I don't know if the current rules then allow for remote access, but it's possible.

The Bod and BL don't grant access to online resources for remote external readers.

The National Library of Scotland does, however only for applicants whose main address is in Scotland, see: https://auth.nls.uk/ldc/ for more info.

Ahhhh, I've only ever had staff cards, which do. Poot. It'd be a very handy thing if they did.

Thanks for all the comments guys. So basically, 'do another degree' (or subset of) is the only practical way? Funny old world. Course I'm always up for another one but I did promise I wouldn't start another till I hit the next decade and I've got two years left there *&)

It is one reason I'm considering mainstream publishers again at the moment actually. I figure that they must have routes?
