I realised, while reading secondary texts for my German Modernism essay, that I could probably write a perfectly decent essay without ever picking up the primary texts.

Completely true. I mainly find myself consulting secondary sources and THEN consulting primary sources to give my papers some legitimacy when it really should be the other way around. Great primary sources can be such a pain to obtain sometimes.
