James' mom has a treo, and although she has iphone envy, she wouldn't trade her treo for the world.

I had an iPhone for a while and you'll have to check up on the latest update to see what's new; they added Google maps street view recently.

The problem with an all-touch touchscreen phone is the lack of tactile feedback. I was never able to operate the phone without looking at the screen, maybe someone else has amazing muscle memory but not me. It was several button presses to get to the favorite phone number list and there was no voice dial, making it a distraction to dial in situations where your attention needs to be elsewhere (driving); all other phones I've had feature voice dial and one touch speed dial.

Other than that design limitation, the interface was very nice and I ultimately got rid of it because I wasn't using it to it's potential considering what I was paying each month for service (ATT doesn't even give you SMS messages on the plan now http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/iPhone3G/)

you should ask goo about his, since his is newer, but i like mine. the camera is crappy, but it's still possible to take decent photos with it (particularly with the app 'camerabag', which is fun). the size is vanishingly small, as far as i'm concerned, it sits in my front pocket and is noticeable enough that i pat frantically if it's missing, but never uncomfortable. the glass screen is completely without scratches after 1.5 years' use. my sister managed to dent the frame, but other than that it's been impervious to damage (knock knock). it still lasts for two days' worth of not talking on the phone (come on, it is me (that is to say, the only person who lacks a livejournal account) we're talking about), along with sporadic browsing over wi-fi and over the air, and lately, addictive video game play. watching movies on the small screen is more immersive than you'd think. the maps are just like google maps, except live (i don't have gps on my purchased-on-day-one model). the only time i max out the space on it is when i have a ( ... )

so far, it's okay anonymous December 1 2008, 15:28:16 UTC
i have an iphone, and have had it since it came out (i got it i think the weekend the first edge one was released). by and large, i'd recommend it but with a couple caveats: the all-touch screen can be a PITA to type on. i see people type faster than me on $40 phones from walmart ... maybe you'd have better luck, but should you consider purchasing one, i'd recommend spending some time in an apple store poking around on the keyboard to see how you like it. the only other real gripe i have about it is the AT&T service. quite simply, it sucks. lots of dropped calls, lots of dead areas. maybe it's just my dumb luck, i dunno. on the upside, the most useful feature (by far) is the full featured web browsing. i can't tell you how many times that has come in handy while M and i were out on the road. good luck!
