Sometimes Jack would close his eyes when he was with Stephen: the further away he was, the less likely he was to lose control. Anything that prolonged the exquisite pleasure between them was worth it, in Jack's estimation.

This, however, was not one of those times.

A bristling dispute in the center of the cabin had suddenly turned into an urgent clash against the nearest wall, breeches opened and shoved down just enough for Jack's large hand to curl roughly around them both.

"Mercy, Jack," Stephen breathlessly pleaded, Jack's gaze holding his with needy intensity.

And they both were lost.

Stephen glanced over at the sketch that Blakeney was tilting in his direction. "Fine work, Mr. Blakeney."

The boy's face broke into the open, easy smile that Stephen had become so fond of these past months. "Thank you, Sir."

Turning his attention back to his own drawing, Stephen felt a tickling at his forearm and brushed at it absentmindedly, eventually pulling away a long golden hair from the edge of his rolled shirtsleeve. He looked wonderingly at it for a moment, then remembered the last place that his arm had been.

He hoped that Blakeney did not notice his blush.

"… perhaps the most impressive wingspan I had ever seen… Jack?" Stephen trailed off at the vacant look on his friend's face, and halted mid-stroll. "Am I boring you?"

Though Stephen's current in-depth recounting of the occasion that he had observed an exceptionally large albatross was, indeed, the type of discourse that would normally be sending Jack into paroxysms of boredom, it was not, however, the cause of Jack's present vague expression.

In truth, he had simply been staring out at the azure sky in an attempt to decide whether its blue was more captivating than the hue of Stephen's eyes.
