Character

Name: Sebastian Michaelis
Fandom: Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler)
Gender: Male
Age: Appearance :Early 30’s. Actual: speculated-most likely thousands of years.
Time Period: Beginning of the cruise ship/zombie arc.
Wing Color: Black
History: here. From the current arc as it’s not included in that: only up to the point where they decide that they will ride the RMS Campania.
Personality: From outward appearances, Sebastian seems to be the perfect butler. Polite, dignified, and a man who appears capable of completing any task set before him by his master, no matter how impossible they may seem to be. From extravagant meals, to arranging an elite ball, Sebastian seems capable of doing it all, whilst acting with the utmost courtesy and with a pleasant smile.
Some would say he’s too perfect.
They would be correct. Because while Sebastian is a butler, he is also a demon from hell, one who eats souls (which is indeed his driving force). For the most part he acts the part assigned to him, but given the right opportunity, Sebastian lets his true nature slip through. He is however, quite the actor. It’s not beyond Sebastian (in fact it’s in his very nature) to be cruel and merciless, to point out the every flaw in people’s actions and character, to kill without a hint of regret-thinly veiled sarcasm and steel cutlery go a long way. His dual-nature is clearer to some people more than others, and in such cases he has no qualms about intimidating/coercing them. Sebastian also is a rather smooth talker, and if necessary: seducer. He doesn’t have much in the way of morals, just aesthetics as both a demon and a butler. It is important to note that while Sebastian is always respectful and well-mannered, it should not be confused with him being nice.
Most often, this is seen in his interactions with Ciel. With Ciel knowing what he truly is, Sebastian lets more of his demonic nature show through. The two are at a constant battle between trying to win over the other, and while Sebastian will always save Ciel due to their contract, he will not do so until the last possible moment. His actions have no regard for Ciel’s actual well-being, just as Ciel as his next meal. For example in the circus arc, Sebastian “neglects” to tell Ciel that he let the poisonous snakes out while Ciel was still in the area. He goes on to say that it would have been Ciel’s own fault had he suffered and been bitten, all with a grin on his face. In fact, Sebastian does derive pleasure from putting Ciel through these torments, whether they’re big (snakes), or small (him leaving Ciel a blank letter in the Murder Mystery Arc). In short, if there is a loophole, Sebastian will take advantage of it for the worse (maliciously).
This is not to say however, that in a weird way Sebastian does not enjoy Ciel’s company, because he does. He compares Ciel’s (face), with a cat’s paw, and the connection is there, he is fond of both things. Regardless, the connection is not a benevolent (healthy) one. There have been times when he’s seemed to act for Ciel’s well-being ( covering his eyes when Ciel saw Grell desecrating a corpse), but I would argue that instead of it being for his mental health, it’s more for a careful and precise blending of Ciel’s soul. Ever since the two have been contracted, Ciel has begun to get progressively darker, different from the boy he once was. Although it’s never outright stated, the characters (or at least presumably the Queen), attribute this partially to Sebastian. The soul has to be flavored just right, and such a large shock (with the Grell incident), may have caused it too much change, too suddenly.
As I said prior however, given the opportune chance, his demonic will show through quite clearly to anyone. This is seen when he berates Prince Sohma for being useless, when he finishes Doll’s sentence that her family is dead (and quite bluntly at that, the English translation doesn’t do it as much justice as the Japanese verb), and even when he intimidates Arthur into never tell anyone what his true being really is. In normal conversation however, it’s not entirely odd to catch a hint of it, though Sebastian does keep it masked in a way.
Even with all these stereotypical qualities of a being from hell though, Sebastian does have a rather large collection of oddities about him. Sebastian is haughty, clever, and refined. For one, he chose to be contracted to Ciel-it wasn’t just an accidental happenstance. He remarks to William that he long ago grew tired of “messily sampling every dish” [read: human souls], and has since decided to only consume the best quality souls even though at present it means he is literally starving. There’s something to be said of his haughtiness and commitment, right there. Not many demons would choose servitude to gain the soul of one human, when presumably it’s just as easy to lure any one that they happen upon. Furthermore, not being a butler to the Phantomhive name withstanding, he is also quite a perfectionist, accomplishing every task asked of him with attention to all the minute details, and with undoubtedly more than a little flourish. In fact, failing at these tasks (whether it be the mere fact that dinner will be slightly delayed or something graver) is one of the few things that seem to genuinely cause Sebastian dissonance. This echoes back to one of his qualities I mentioned prior-that he is refined. Sebastian is picky, and can afford to be so-which is why he picks such exquisite, slow-cooked, meals (Ciel). Something (someone) who is of subpar quality simply isn’t worth his time. There are some other things that irritate him however, such as being off schedule (if only for a few seconds), dogs, uncouth people, and fellow servants that are lazy. Additionally, Sebastian doesn’t hold much of an opinion of the majority of humans, he finds them lacking context, easily lured in and taken care of. This probably explains why just devouring anyone isn’t appealing to him-although he’s not a game player in the sense that Ciel is, it’s not hard a hard stretch to say that other humans for the most are boring in a sense to him. Admittedly, one of the things he says about Ciel is that he has chosen to stick to his path until the end, no matter how dark it may get.
In contrast he really only has one thing that makes him happy-cats. To Sebastian, cats are the epitome of perfection, as they don’t say useless things and are well: adorable. Said cats are also the only possible source of distraction for Sebastian as well, as he’s been known to drop what he’s doing just to cater to a feline.

Strengths:
Physical:
 Superior hand-hand fighting prowess.
 Above human strength, stamina and agility.
 Numerous abilities as a butler, such as cleaning, cooking, etc.
 Capable of speeds faster than any human could ever wish for.
 Able to use cutlery in ways master chefs could only dream of (Butterknives can be deadly weapons!).
 Able to teleport to Ciel when summoned.

 Fire and Atmosphere manipulation to an unknown extent [In canon, he was able to turn a single candle flame into a great blaze, and also make all the lights in the room go out briefly].

 Soul-eating. Om nom nom.
 Ability to transform into his true, demonic form, which at current is only about 5% revealed. With this (if the anime is any indication), comes greatly enhanced power.

 Handsome; which is packed up by numerous female characters in the manga (Madam Red, Meirin, etc).

 Able to sustain just about any amount of pure physical damage without really being injured (though he’s a great actor); magical/spiritual would be different.

Mental:
 He seems quite intelligent-he manages to keep track of all the things Ciel tells him to do no matter how ridiculous they are.
 A great memory it seems, as he often recalls a superfluous amount of items, or things that happened hundreds of years ago.

Emotional:
 The fact that he doesn’t hold to any morals could be quite an advantage-it makes choices easy for him.
 On the same line, he is most likely capable of doing anything for his ultimate goal.
 Sebastian is also rather astute at hiding his emotions, though there are rare times he does genuinely display them.

Weaknesses:
Physical :
 It could be assumed that Sebastian is capable of being harmed by magical means, as the Death Scythe was able to damage him.
 …his hair is slightly “messy” for a butler. Or at least the Baroness thinks so!

Mental:
 Sebastian will take any letter to a “T”. In Ciel’s case, this has proven to be troublesome on several occasions.

Emotional:

 One thing Sebastian will never understand/could never employ is human love. He states this to Ciel several times-that love and faith are things that can’t be known to him.
 He is a little…picky and haughty. Arrogant, but underhandedly so.
