Prompt: 033 - Flirt
Pairing: KiSung (with a bit of Sungmin thrown in)
Summary: Kibum is tired of Yesung's jealousy and finds comfort in another guy.
Dedicated to: Kibum and Yesung for their birthdays =)
"Damn, that guy is hot."
"Which one?"
"That one, sitting by himself."
"Oh, you mean Kibummie?"
"Kibummie? You-you know that guy?"
"Yeah, course I do."
...
"Well?"
"What?"
"Who is he??"
"Kibummie, duh."
...
"Where do you know him?"
"Oh, he's in my English class. Pretty good at the language, too."
"Really? You know him well?"
"Not really. He has his own group of friends."
"He's not with them right now."
"No, guess not."
Slap on the forehead.
"Guess he's not much of a people-person, huh?"
"Not off-campus, anyway."
"What's he like, though?"
"He's pretty friendly. Great smile."
"I'll say. What kind of genes produces that kind of smile, anyway?"
"Superman's, probably."
"Yeah.." They both laugh.
"Stop checking him out though. You look creepy like that."
"I do not!"
"Yeah, whatever. Tell that to the judge."
"Really, I'm not."
"Whatever. Go flirt with him if he's so attractive."
"What? No way!"
"Why not? You flirt with my boyfriend often enough."
"We're just friends. You can't count that as flirting."
"What are you talking about? Flirting is flirting and from what I've seen, you're an expert."
"Hitting on your best friend just for the pleasure of making him squirm and hitting on a stranger because he's hot are two completely different things."
"But he's not a stranger anymore. You already know who he is."
"Only by association to you. Which is the same as me not knowing anything about him at all."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You know nothing about other people and you never let me meet your friends so I can't get to know them myself."
"Excuse me? What are you talking about? I happen to know a LOT about other people-"
"Like what?"
"Um, well... I can't think of anything right now..."
"I rest my case."
"Look, we're getting completely off the topic-"
"As usual."
"Go flirt with Kibummie already."
And with that, Donghae pushes Sungmin unceremoniously over to Kibum's direction.
Sungmin gulps. He wants to run away but Kibum has already seen him. Sungmin walks gingerly over to where Kibum is sitting at a table by himself.
Kibum, watching as Sungmin approached, offers a friendly smile, sending Sungmin's heart flying into a million different directions at once. But Sungmin notices the slight crease of Kibum's brows, as if the latter is trying to place Sungmin somewhere in his mental list of existing friends.
"Um, hi," Sungmin says, trying to sound more confident than he feels but failing.
"Hi," Kibum replies. "Can I help you?"
"Um..." Sungmin feels hot and clammy all of a sudden. "Come here often?" Mental slap. What does that even come from??
Kibum cocks an eyebrow but answers anyway, "Often enough." He isn't offering anything more than that.
"Oh, okay," Sungmin says, trying to work up a smile.
"Is there anything else?" Kibum asks, not so subtly looking at his wristwatch.
"Uh, um..." Sungmin stutters, not able to think of anything else to say but not wanting to leave either. "I guess n-"
"Bummie! There you are!" A loud voice causes Sungmin to turn on his heels in time to see a blur of black rushing past him towards Kibum. He turns back to see that the blur of black currently has Kibum clutched tightly in his arms.
"Sungie-" Kibum struggles to push the blur off of him but fails. "Need... to breathe..."
"Oh sorry!" The blur, which turns out to be a human, releases Kibum and sits down next to him, dragging the chair along to be as close to Kibum as possible.
Kibum smiles, as if the apology wasn't at all necessary. "It's okay, Sungie. You're late though."
"I'm sorry! I thought you said to meet at the bar across the street! I've been waiting there for two hours!" The human blur, whom Sungmin now sees is a man not too far from his own age, says dramatically.
Sungmin is torn between running away and pulling Kibum away from the scary black creature that appeared out of nowhere.
Then Kibum seems to remember his presence and gestures for his.. friend? to turn around. "Uh, this is-" Kibum pauses, as if just remembering that he doesn't actually know who Sungmin is. "Who are you again?"
"Um, I'm Sungmin," Sungmin blushes. Kibum's "friend" turns around with a wide smile and waves enthusiastically, even though Sungmin was not even two feet away from him.
"Hi, Sungmin! I'm Yesung!" Sungmin imagines Yesung as one of those animated emoticons he loves to use when chatting online, the one with the big round yellow face permanently waving with a giant grin and a piece of spinach stuck to its teeth, except Yesung is way hotter and his teeth are perfectly clean of any intruding spinach.
"Um, nice to.. meet you," Sungmin offers his hand, uncertain of what exactly was the protocol when your "flirting mission" was interrupted by a blur from outer space.
Yesung enthusiastically stands up and shakes Sungmin's hand. "Haven't met you yet. Are you Kibum's new friend?" Sungmin is sure he can see the emoticon for ':D' replacing Yesung's face.
"Um-" Sungmin is at a complete loss as to how to answer that. "Not really. We... just met actually...."
"Oh..." Yesung deflates very slightly, and then, as if deciding that it doesn't matter, he goes on, "Wanna sit with us?" He practically drags Sungmin to the table.
"Um, no thanks." How many times has he said 'Um' tonight anyway? "I'm... actually here with a friend." Sungmin makes a weak gesture towards Donghae, who is sitting at the bar chatting animatedly with the bartender.
"Oh, okay then." To Sungmin's immense relief, Yesung finally releases his hand. "Well, see you around!" Yesung, still grinning, remains standing, as if waiting for Sungmin to leave before sitting back down.
---Yesung's POV---
"Have you been flirting again?" Yesung asks venomously the second he sits down after Sungmin has walked away, glaring at Kibum.
"What?" Kibum, startled at the question, looks at Yesung blankly.
"Who was that?" Yesung demands, pushing Kibum's hand away as the latter tries to hold his hand.
"I don't know." Kibum shrugs, as if to support his words. "Never saw the guy before."
"Are you sure?" Yesung narrows his eyes suspiciously at the other boy.
Kibum smiles, melting Yesung's heart and driving away a bit of his anger. "Don't be jealous, Sungie."
"I'm not," Yesung says defensively, frowning and sitting up in his chair, his arms folded. For some reason, this causes Kibum to chuckle. Yesung glares at him. "This isn't funny."
"Of course not," Kibum agrees, stroking Yesung's cheek tenderly.
Blushing, Yesung pushes Kibum's hand away a second time, still frowning. "I hate it when other guys approach you."
"I can't help it, Sungie. You've got yourself a really good catch." Kibum laughs as Yesung swats at him.
"Can we go somewhere else?"
Glancing behind Yesung towards where Sungmin was sitting and looking at them, Kibum's smile tightens slightly. "Yeah, sure. Let's go." Yesung's heart warms up at this. He knows that Kibum hates to see him jealous because it means that he's not happy. Kibum doesn't like it when Yesung isn't his usual happy self.
---Kibum's POV---
Sometimes Yesung's jealousy can be suffocating. Sometimes Kibum wishes Yesung could trust him more.
Kibum sighs. No point in thinking like that now. He's stuck with Yesung now. Not because he's forced to, of course, but because he really does care about the older boy. He can't leave Yesung because Yesung needs him, a lot more than he needs Yesung.
He looks down at Yesung who is sleeping in the crook of his shoulder and can't help but smile. He hates Yesung's uncontrollable jealousy but when Yesung is sleeping like this, he looks every bit the vulnerable boy he had revealed himself to be when Kibum first met him, when Kibum first fell in love.
---Yesung's POV---
Yesung sighs softly, remembering Kibum's soft touch on his cheek. He frowns, and then absentmindedly wonders whether he has dimples when he frowns.
He shakes his head and returns to his previous train of thought, Kibum. He frowns again, this time not letting any other thoughts distract him.
Yesung wonders why so many guys like to flirt with Kibum. He knows that Kibum is really hot and has that stupid irresistible smile and all, but still. Kibum is his. Can't they see that?
Yesung decides that he must buy something for Kibum that will say, "BELONGS TO YESUNG. DO NOT TOUCH." Yes, that's what he will do.
---Kibum's POV---
For some reason, Kibum doesn't forget Sungmin right away. He usually forgets when he's been flirted with because his thoughts are always either focused on his studies or on Yesung.
Now, every time Kibum sees Donghae, he is reminded of Sungmin. Donghae never talks to him about it, but Kibum suspects Donghae just doesn't care enough to find out the details from Sungmin.
Occasionally, Kibum catches glimpses of Sungmin around the campus but Sungmin is always hurrying off to one place or another. Kibum never gets the opportunity to actually talk to Sungmin, not that he knows why he would even want to.
When Kibum is finally able to talk to Sungmin, it is by pure chance. As he waits in line at the coffee shop not too far from campus, taking a break from his studies, his eyes roam over the customers until he sees Sungmin, sitting alone at a booth and looking glumly down at his drink.
After Kibum has placed his order, he makes his way over to Sungmin's table and slides into the seat across from him. He waits until Sungmin looks up in surprise before saying, "I hope you don't mind if I sit here. I don't feel like being alone right now."
"Oh, um, sure," Sungmin mumbles, looking down again, but not before Kibum sees the hint of a blush tinting Sungmin's cheeks.
"I've never seen you here before," Kibum says, starting the conversation.
"I only come here sometimes, when Donghae's busy with his other friends," Sungmin replies softly, still staring at the table.
"I come here everyday at this time," Kibum says, looking around the cafe.
Sungmin's head shoots up at this. He looks at Kibum in confusion, but Kibum keeps looking at the other customers, refusing to meet his gaze. Sungmin crinkles his eyebrows. Why would Kibum even tell him that?
They don't talk anymore after that. Kibum sips at his coffee silently while Sungmin shifts around in his seat, feeling uncomfortable so close to the guy he'd attempted to flirt with.
Finally, Kibum finishes his drink and stands up. He smiles at Sungmin as he says, "I gotta go back to the library. See you around." He leaves before Sungmin can think of a coherent reply.
The next day, and the days following that, Kibum and Sungmin find themselves at the cafe together often, drinking coffee. Sometimes they are quiet, each with his own thoughts. Sometimes they talk, and it is these moments that they both enjoy the most, although Kibum will never admit it to anyone, not even himself.
Yesung had given Kibum a specialised wristwatch, with a picture of the two of them on its face. Yet, Kibum finds himself replacing it with his own watch every time he goes to the cafe. He forces away the feelings of guilt that surface in favour of the pleasure he finds in conversing with Sungmin.
---Yesung's POV---
Yesung bites his lip hard in an attempt to prevent the tears from coming. He doesn't understand it. Lately, Kibum has become more and more distant and he doesn't know why.
He had given Kibum the wristwatch and Kibum does wear it everywhere, yet that was all on the surface. On the surface, everything is fine. Kibum has become more and more busy lately with exams coming. Yesung knows how important Kibum's education is to him and he doesn't mind. Everything else is normal.
But deep inside, Yesung senses something amiss. Not everything is the same anymore and he can't think of why. It hurts badly but Yesung can't bring himself to confront Kibum with it because he knows Kibum will just say that the exams have him stressed out, which is true, but not the complete truth.
Yesung sighs. He wants to cry but he won't let himself because it's stupid to cry about something he doesn't even understand. It's stupid... Stupid...
---Kibum's POV---
Kibum has finally reached the point where he prefers Sungmin's company over Yesung's. Sungmin is so different from Yesung. Where Yesung hates the thought of Kibum hanging out with his classmates, Sungmin takes it all in stride. He didn't mind at all. As he says himself, Kibum has his own life and his own friends.
---Donghae's POV---
Donghae looks at Sungmin suspiciously. Recently, the older boy has been looking more and more cheerful. Whistling while doing his homework of all things. Whistling??? While doing your homework???? Who gets cheerful over homework! That is madness right there!
Sungmin looks up to meet Donghae's gaze. He smiles. "What?"
"What's up with you lately?"
"I don't know what you mean," Sungmin replies smoothly, returning his attention to the paper in front of him.
Donghae narrows his eyes. He may be oblivious about a lot of things but when his own best friend is concerned, he can't be expected to miss much. "Where have you been going in the afternoons?" he asks.
Sungmin looks up again, not missing the hint of emotion beneath the question. Donghae misses him. They haven't spent as much time together anymore ever since Sungmin started meeting up with Kibum everyday.
"Where've you been, Minnie?" Donghae's voice is lowered, soft and quiet. Because he does miss Sungmin. Although he has many other friends to hang out with, Sungmin is his closest friend and he doesn't know why he doesn't see Sungmin as much as he used to.
"Hae," Sungmin says, just as softly. He is moved by the use of his childhood nickname and feels guilty for keeping secrets from Donghae.
After that, Sungmin can't help but to tell Dognhae the truth, about Kibum and about their meetings at the cafe. Donghae is delighted by the idea of Sungmin hooking up with Kibum and dismisses the fact that Kibum actually already has another person in his life.
---Yesung's POV---
Yesung is smiling happily as he walks into the cafe late in the afternoon. He knows that Kibum always comes here for a break and he is looking forward to seeing the look of surprise on the latter's face when he sees Yesung.
Yesung stops. Very suddenly, he feels sick. He wants to vomit. He wants to faint. Most of all, Yesung wants to run away and cry in his room alone.
What Yesung sees causes his heart to stop beating momentarily. Not literally, but that's how he feels. What he feels is betrayal and hurt. What he hears is the pounding of his heart, once it has started to beat again, loud against his ears.
Yesung sees Kibum in the arms of another guy.
