His village is quiet in the dark half-light of false dawn.
No, not his village. Not yet. Someday, she says, but he only believes her at times like this, when he walks through the quiet, empty streets and looks up at the building and knows that there are families in there, mothers and fathers and children, brothers and sisters, friends, lovers, and he’ll do anything to make sure their lives are protected. That’s when he believes her.
This morning, though, he walks with a purpose. He has to see her before he leaves on this mission, and private moments are few and far between, especially since her brother and the villagers all seem to be conspiring against them. He can just bet there would be hell to pay if he ever hurt her. Not that he ever will, if he can help it.
So they’re meeting at a tree that overlooks everything, to watch the sunrise, or else maybe he wouldn’t have gotten up at such an ungodly hour, because missions require rest, but she’s more important to him than an hour or so of extra sleep.
When he gets there, she’s already up at the top, sitting on a sturdy branch, swinging her legs absently. She’s cute like that, smiling a little, with the faint golden glow of the coming day making her eyes sparkle. He puts his arm around her waist hesitantly when he reaches her, not quite sure she’ll let him, but she leans into it, cheeks turning pink, and he’s not sure if she’s blushing or if it’s the light from the sunrise, but he decides to be proud of himself just in case.
She says it’s pretty, the first comment either of them has made, and he decides to be cliché and say beautiful back, watching her instead of the sun. That time he’s sure she’s blushing, and it makes him grin, and she clinches it by shoving him, irritated, and he laughs because he was right. And then he’s kissing her, and he hesitates but she kisses him back so that’s fine too, and when they finally break apart she tells him to be careful, and to come back soon, and he holds her close an promises her everything.
When he comes home again they watch the sunset, and he’s content, because she’s here in his arms, and everyone he cares about is safe, and she’s happy, because he’s here with her. He couldn’t ask for more.
[A/N] In which I successfully avoided writing Dan OOC by not actually writing Dan. But it gives me warm-fuzzies, so yey. >>
