“I, Mary Morstan, take you John Watson, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

The pastor smiled and turned to John, repeating the words over again. Sherlock tried not to frown. Were all weddings this tedious? He had never attended one before, but on television they tended to go quickly - or else they were dramatically interrupted by previous husbands and wives, illegitimate children, murder accusations-

“I, John Watson, take you Sherlock-”

The church went silent.

That was certainly dramatic enough for one of Mrs. Hudson’s stories, Sherlock would have thought if he could have thought anything.

Mary didn’t quite say anything. She certainly didn’t look at her fiancée, who had frozen in open-mouthed shock, staring at the pastor as if the poor man could explain what had just come over John. She handed her bouquet to the Maid of Honour - Molly, in a pretty blue dress that actually flattered her - and gathered up her train, and walked back down the aisle.

No one seemed capable of saying anything.

After a long - painfully long - pause, Sherlock made himself get up. Mycroft made a grab for his hand, to pull him back down, but he evaded it without a second thought, swept up the aisle, and stopped beside John with a contemplative look on his face.

John’s look of utter shock turned to him. Sherlock smiled calmly.

“Well. Are we having a wedding, or not?”
