MERRY EFFING CHRISTMAS
First! Thank you so much for agreeing to write me a story for one of these fandoms. By virtue of that alone, I can tell you're wonderful. I'm so excited to read whatever it is you come up with, and I'm sure I will love it with my whole entire heart.
GENERAL LIKES: I'm into all sorts of fics: character studies, slice-of-life, scenes that slot somewhere within the canon and expand upon it, future fic, road trips, tropes! -- fake dating!!!, sharing a bed, mutual pining, trapped in an elevator -- AUs (all the AUs! a good soulmate au, or depending on the fandom, a high school/college au, heist au, etc.)! I enjoy fic that delves into relationships, and I don't mind smut, but I like it to say something about the relationship and how it functions/changes. I like snappy dialogue, prose that reads like poetry and anything that fits the tone of the fandom/is in character.
GENERAL DISLIKES: noncon or dubcon, character bashing, especially to prop up a ship (it obviously depends, but there's a fine line between Character A not like Character B, and the story putting a character down, you know?), character death and kid fic. I like angst, but I like it to feel deserved and right, and not just for its own sake.
THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN (2016) [Nadine Franklin, Krista, Erwin Kim]
I loved this movie so much. I thought it was smart, honest, touching, and really funny. It understood what it's like to be a teenage girl in all its messy glory: Nadine was awful, annoying, just self-aware enough, endearing, and easy to relate to. Hailee's performance was wonderful and really brought her to life. Any fic that focuses on Nadine would be welcome, because I absolutely adore her. Whether you look at different moments growing up that shaped her (other than the ones touched on briefly in the film/her father's death, etc). Or maybe looking to the future: what do her dreams and ambitions end up being? How's college for her? How does her relationship with her brother and mom change over time?
I was also really interested in her friendship with Krista. It meant the world to her, and I found that both refreshing and true. It's not that romance wasn't on Nadine's mind, it's that at her core, her relationship with Krista was the most important relationship she had and the most important thing to her, even more so than boys. You could definitely dive into the betrayal she felt when Krista and her brother started dating, or look at it from Krista's point-of-view, but I'm not really interested in the Krista/Darian relationship other than what it means for Krista and Nadine -- and that I am SUPER INTO. If you wanted to explore a romantic edge to this relationship, I'm SUPER INTO IT. I could easily believe part of what upset Nadine about Krista/Darian is that Nadine was in love with Krista? Unrequited love! Pining! Falling in love with your best friend! Whether Krista returns Nadine's feelings (into! it!) or not (also! into it!) I'd love that.
I was also completely endeared by Erwin and his crush on Nadine. He was genuinely sweet and their chemistry was soft and wonderful. When she tells him she knows his film was about her, and he tells her "No," before admitting she's right? So great! He's a good person who wants to be there for her, but he won't let her walk all over him, either. Any fic that maybe deals with that dynamic, how she learns from him, what he learns from her, etc. If you want to explore his crush on Nadine before it was requited, I think those little moments would be wonderful to soak in. Or their relationship after the film ends! Maybe their first date, or any date! Maybe him coming over for dinner and meeting her mom. Fic exploring the two of them falling in love for the first time, the unexpected things that come with it: how easy or complicated it is, the highs and lows. Anything exploring their relationship would be absolutely amazing!
Or, if you want to have the three of them interact, I'd be interested in that as well! How does Krista deal with her best friend having a boyfriend and splitting her time? Do Erwin and Krista get along? What are the dynamics like when the three of them are together?
WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING (1995) [Lucy Moderatz, Jack Callaghan]
This is one of my favorite romantic comedies ever. I have fond memories of watching it with my mother on VHS while I was growing up, and I try to rewatch it every year during the holidays. It's funny and warm and the found family aspect of it hits my heart just right. I love Lucy and Jack, and I would love fic about either of them in any capacity, and especially fic about the two of them together.
Ideas: Explore Lucy's relationship with her father before he passed away. He's such a core part of who she is, and I'd be really interested in seeing their dynamic in action. I'd love fic about how Lucy ended up working for the CTA and maybe all the people she encounters there. I'd be interested in fic about Jack and how his love for building furniture develops, or something that explores the complex relationships he has with his father and brother. The love and the guilt and the resentment there for multiple reasons.
For the two of them together!: Show me all the places they travel and all the stamps she gets in her passport! Show me their domestic bliss! Folding laundry and throwing balled-up socks at each other! Having to deal with a broken dishwasher or clogged sink! I'd love to see their future holidays and the traditions they make together. And, of course, feel free to explore the family dynamics between the two of them and all of the Callaghans. I love Lucy finding a home in Jack and a family in the Callaghans, and anything that digs into that would be delightful and heartwarming.
DEAD LIKE ME [Georgia Lass, Mason]
I love this show so much: I think it's incredibly smart and funny, but also does an incredible job dealing with grief, with what it means to live, and navigates the complexities of relationships quite well. There's a real heart at the core of Dead Like Me, which is probably why I love it as much as I do.
George starts the show despondent and sarcastic, unmotivated and selfish. There's something incredibly relatable about how blase she finds life, hers in particular. She's incredibly smart, possesses such a fun wit, and, as we find out, has so much love in her heart for her family -- to varying degrees and with various complications influencing how she views them. Any story exploring who she is and how she feels about things would be great! If you want to go back and expand on the bits of her life the show gave us I'd be interested in seeing how she became the person who got hit by that toilet seat. Or look into how she views her life in retrospect now that she's dead and sees it differently. Is there anything she's proud of? What does she see her legacy as, or what would she want people to remember about her? What's a moment she regrets? Is there something she wants to make amends for? Can she?
Show me a reaping she does that hits a particular nerve, makes her reflect on how she views something: childhood, education, death, love. These are all very broad ideas the show touched on, but any expansion of her character would be amazing! And if she works a reaping (I keep wanting to call it a "case" as is the common tv procedural lingo, but it's not ... a case) with Mason, I would also be interested in that! I loved their dynamic so much, and I think the chemistry between them is nice and warm. So any fic that has them interacting and relating to each other is right up my alley.
I felt like the pilot introduced them as a possible coupling, and I was very into it! And somewhere along the way the show dropped it, but then after the Mason/Daisy affair, it seemed like the show was heading back into a George/Mason direction, and I was VERY! INTO! IT! I'm still very sad the show got cancelled before they could really delve into them romantically. So if you want to pick that thread back up from the end of season two and have them get together, I would love that. Bits and pieces of their relationship, how they grow together and change together, maybe they get to their quota to enter the afterlife together? I always felt a little bit like the quota was sort of arbitrary and the reapers just had to grow/learn something before they were finished, so if they accomplished that elusive thing together, I'd be happy. But if you're more interested in a friendship between them, I'd love any fic exploring that.
THE GOOD PLACE (TV) [Eleanor Shellstrop, Chidi Anagonye, Tahani Al-Jamil]
This is definitely my favorite currently airing show, and I look forward to watching it each week and try to rewatch the episodes at least once. It's so funny and smart, and the twists always leave my mouth agape and my mind screaming. Before I start rambling, I love Eleanor, Chidi and Tahani all so much, and characters study of any one of them would be wonderful: more of their experiences on earth that shaped them. We know their main "sins:" selfishness, indecisiveness, lack of humility (I guess? Tahani's situation being so mixed up in her family makes my view of her "fatal flaw" super complicated and harder to state in one word), but what are their best traits? How do they show their positive characteristics?
Or, before they know they're really in the bad place, what are little things that annoy them and make them itch? What are things they love? Does anything bring them pure, unbridled joy? We know Eleanor figures the twist out often, and Jason that one time, but does Chidi ever? Does Tahani ever suspect, but brush it off?
I also love seeing their relationships with each other develop, so any fic dealing with any combination of these three characters as friends or romantically, including all three of them together in one wonderful relationship, is something I'm very much interested in and About. It's sad to see the reboots push them back, but also really understandable. If you wanted to look into a few of those 800+ reboots, I'd absolutely love to see what went on there. What things remain constant? What things change? What little things drive them bananas about each other, both positively and negatively. Are there reboots where Eleanor/Tahani fall in love? Or Chidi/Tahani? Does Eleanor ever conspire to get Chidi and Tahani together? Does Tahani ever do that for Chidi and Eleanor? Or Eleanor and Tahani team up to romantically seduce Chidi! I'm also thinking so many romcom tropes could be used here: fake dating! sharing a bed! friends with benefits turns into feelings! I'd also be into any AU you'd want for them: college AU! Heist AU! SNL AU! Real Housewives AU! Send them on a roadtrip! Really, anything at all will thrill me.
ONE DAY AT A TIME (TV 2017) [Penelope Alvarez, Lydia Riera]
This show felt like a breath of fresh air. I fell in love with it immediately. The kind of humor and jokes made me feel nostalgic for family sitcoms I used to watch when I was younger, and I laughed so much every episode. But I also loved how it managed to respectfully and responsibly deal with real issues.
I love Penelope so much, and I walked away from the first season with such respect for her as a person, and as a mother, who was just trying her best to stand up for what she believes in and take care of her family in the best way she could. Any fic about her life would be amazing. Give me tales of her childhood, her teenage years, the moments that made her the woman we see in the show. I'd be interested in how she and Lydia navigate each other as she grows up. What do they argue about or bond over? Does Penelope ever rebel, and how does she? How does Penelope deal with being a first generation American? Is it difficult for her balance her Cuban culture and heritage at home and how she interacts with her peers at school? Does she ever resent her mother? What's her time like in the army? Any fic dealing with that, or her PTSD, would also be great.
We know Lydia wasn't always open and honest about her struggles in coming to America, especially with regard to her sister, so did Penelope ever get glimpses of the sad and complex feelings Lydia carries with her? Any type mother/daughter fic would be great here. Whether set in present time, or any time in the past. Penelope coming to Lydia for parenting advice, maybe!
If you want to write fic focusing on Lydia and her perspective on her life, I would also love that so much. She's such a strong, wonderful, funny woman, and anything expanding on her life, whether in conjunction with raising Penelope or not, would be excellent. The love she had for her husband is endearing, and seeing that relationship would be interesting and illuminating. That kind of bond and love changes someone and shapes them, and it'd be fun to see your take on it.
