It's common everywhere, but I think magnified when there are so few women of an age group in an area.

I really dig the book "She Wins, You Win" if you happen to find a copy at your local library. Makes a good case for how this style of infighting keeps all women down, and gives some sensible motivations for trying out the other style, collaboration, even if not warmth of sentiment.
