Third Time's the Charm: A Review of GoF

Nov 23, 2005 22:54

Ok, by now I've seen 'Goblet of Fire' not one--not two--but *three* whopping times! As I kept repeating to my poor, dear JG--whom I have no idea how she puts up with me, on our second time 'round--'I love this movie, I *love* this movie!' Indeed, I do love this movie. Of the films so far, I feel that this is the one with the most depth (*cough* ( Read more... )

The way I look at it, the less Sirius the better.)

That's because you have good taste. And of course, so do I. ;-)

Top 3 Canon Scenes I Wished They'd Kept
1. Snape going back to VOldemort on Dumbledore's orders (They left this out?! WTF, man?! Cutting out all this Snape stuff means someone's gonna have to do some *serious* back-peddaling in future movies.)
2. Snape's grey nightshirt (Snape+suggestions of nocturnal activities of any variety=instant joy. 'Nuff said.)
3. Snape blasting rose bushes at the Yule Ball (I *still* laugh out loud when I read that in the book!)

At least one of these would have improved the film by about 500%. But we all know that Steve Kloves is an idiot - he constantly advertises the fact.

Raises a goblet of elf-made wine to toast the common hatred of all things Sirius.

While looking back through some posts at Leaky, I saw a link to another site that had pictures of scenes that had been cut from the movie. Apparently, they *did* film some sort of scene of Igor and Severus at the ball having an intense discussion--whether this was the infamous rose bushes scene or not, I have no idea, but it sounds suspicious. Hopefully, it will be included on the DVD. *crosses fingers/vows to hex Mike Newell if that scene isn't there*

As for Kloves, he's done some things I've liked, some things I've hated. I'm more inclined to blame the directors for things that have been left out. Unless/until they release the original movie scripts, perhaps we shall never know who is more to blame.

I have always been surprised with what the directors/writer leaves out of the film versions of Harry Potter. It makes me wonder, is all that I think is important mere distraction in Ms. Rowling's view or as you said, is there going to be a lot of back pedaling; or, does this really confirm that Snape is on the side of the Order of the Phoenix. There seemed to be an awful lot of discussion as to whether Snape had been at the graveyard among fanfiction writers. It is pretty obvious, now, that he wasn't.

I had also completely forgotten, or have I, that Barty Crouch Jr. was at Tom Riddle's home at the top of the book?

I completely agree with you the closest scene was great. There is just too little of Severus Snape in these movies for me! I kept wondering, after seeing in once, why the scene of his showing his mark to the Minister was out, too.

Now, if I were directing the film..... Not this girl!

*Nods* Me, too! Now, as I recall from reading your profile, you work in theatre, right? I did a fair bit of theatre when I was in college, and if I remember correctly, it's really more the director than the writer who has control over what scenes are cut, what scenes are manipulated, etc. So, it's entirely possible that Kloves wrote more Snape into the script but Newell (and Cuaron and Columbus before him) rewrote or left out those parts. Is this right? This is why I'm always much more inclined to blame the director than Kloves for the lack of Snape. Either way, eventually, the lack of Snape will catch up with them, and we're bound to have a Snape-centric film... the question is, will they cover their tracks in movie 5 or wait until movie 6?

*ON! TO THE MOVIE! (Here, I present a Russian Novel)*

Damn, woman THREE times???? I have a long list of people who want to see it with me, so I have a feeling I'm going to catch up with you this weekend. :p And from what Ms. Gentile has in her away message as well as what the heraldic celestial beings on the Weather Channel have reported: I hear it's snowing there. You poor thing! Here I was wearing a turtleneck and bitching about how the temperature dropped to the 50's yesterday! Anyhoo, Happy Meleagris gallopavo Day! (Alice does seem to be moulting a bit more than usual today :P ( ... )

Notice how in most scenes with the staff in the Great Hall, Severus was almost always kinda ominously blurred behind Dumbledore.

I *loved* that. I'm bummed that Alan didn't have a lot of speaking lines, but he *was* in a lot of scenes (all of which were *breathtaking*) anyway. I think it was almost a subliminal message of sorts: Severus literally and figuratively has Dumbledore's back in this movie.

Yeah, they needed more Snape in this movie hard-core. In the book, I only really enjoyed the Severus scenes anyways.
Me, too. This and CoS... all I like are the Snape bits. Although I *love* GoF the film. So far, my favourite movies in order are: 4, 1, 2, 3 (damn Curaon for ruining my hitherto favourite book!).

Who was that chick looking up at Severus all hopefully like if she was begging him to ask her to dance, but he clearly ignored her? It was kinda cute, but I'm glad they never showed whether or not he did, because if it was so, then it would have been grossly out of character.I didn't notice this, but that's probably because I ( ... )

Agreed on the brilliant scenes. I would also add the ferret scene, though. It was one of my favourites. I loved Moody in that one. Besides, the ferret was rather cute.
the less Sirius the better
I agree. But BBQ Sirius was a little gross.
Brilliant performances: Agreed.
I totally disagree regarding Voldy touching his new body = sexy. To me, Voldy = ew!
Basically, I think this movie is the best HP movie so far. POA was such a disappointment.
And I'm so looking forward to the DVD, hoping they've included the top 3 canon scenes there.
*Off to check out the Beck site*

*shudders* The scene just rubbed me the wrong way. I found it disturbing to think of Draco (in any way) down his lackey's pants.

BBQ Sirius was a little gross.
LOL! Well put! I thought that his face appeared in the flames in canon...? I can't understand why they changed it. Oh well--I hope all the Sirius lovers were extremely turned off by it. :P

To me, Voldy = ew!
Come on, he's powerful and mysterious... and he's played by Ralph Fiennes! Mark my words, you'll see a huge rise in Voldy fandom thanks to this movie. :)

Me, too! I saw a picture somewhere (a link from an article on Leaky) of Snape and Karkaroff talking at the Yule Ball in a scene that sounded suspiciously like it may have been a derivative of the rose bush scene, so hopefully we'll get more Snape on the DVD.

And that's disturbing ... Come on, he's Eeeeeeevilllll! And has no nose!

I've seen that Snape & Karkaroff pic, too. That's probably on the DVD. But the nightshirt scene? Give me the nightshirt scene!

The new Beck site is febulous, by the way. It takes some time to figure out how to use it, but it's worth it!

Severus is, was, and forever shall be BRILLIANT: both in film and in canon! They should have gambled with the extra twenty minuites of film and at least do a shortened version of the Hospital wing scene. I mean we don't even find out what happened to Barty Jr.! They could have just skipped the whining Weasleys (to stick with the SpanLatinish: por que no pegan ahi) for the sake of time. But Sirius would have had to be there: I actually really love the scene where he and Severus have to shake hands! All I know is that the next film shall be better called Harry Potter and the Marauder-Era Plot Holes. It's like they just keep postponing all the 1970's goodness for the next films. Pisses me off ( ... )
