I can't sleep till i answer this because Tolkien was pretty lopsided in speaking Faramir's side in Steward and the King chapter, i thought.

So what did Eowyn understand in the following quote? what is "it", pray?

:p And thanks grey_wonderer for feeding the fire.

“Then the heart of Eowyn changed or else at last she understood it. And suddenly her ( Read more... )

This is a lovely and perceptive point of view. They both deserve such a wonderful happily-ever-after!

Thanks so much ! It’s been bothering me for a while and I just feel like Eowyn’s voice isn’t too apparent in the chapter. I do feel there are more gaps to fill and my other WIP will prob help too.:)

Feeding the fire is a thing that I love. It results in more writing from you and I enjoy that very much . I loved reading this.

Thanks so much ! I feel like Tolkien didn’t write eowyn’s point of view at all in that chapter and poor Faramir who said I love you and she didn’t even reply with …anything specific about how she feels.
haha
I prob will elongate this to finish my other HoH WIP. We will see!:) thanks for feeding my fire !

I think 'it' was her heart....she understood what her heart wanted.

And did her heart change in that instance to love Faramir instead ?

I think her heart, and mindseye, saw Faramir as if for the first time, as someone she had grown to love.

Probably that is the moment she said she did not want to be a queen anymore and instead be a healer in which first she can heal Faramir .
In fandom I feel like a lot of people say her change of heart was sudden but Tolkien didn’t write Faramir in his first drafts or I think wanted aragorn and eowyn at first . So it’s interesting how Tolkien thought about all this. His letters did say he felt eowyn and Faramir to have an old fashioned courtship and trauma does make people come closer faster .
Sorry that was long but I do love this topic haha

Engagements used to be faster I know, in Tolkien's time frame. Perhaps that is why it seemed so fast

Regarding the speed of Faramir and Éowyn's love, Tolkien said that in his experience such feeling ripen very quickly in periods of stress, especially in the face of death. No lengthy petty fencing occurred; this was not a period of "Courtly Love" with its pretenses but a time with a more primitive (less corrupt and nobler) culture.

Letter 244, "Letters of JRR Tolkien"

yes you are right! i'm not used to that speed. haha

Even Tolkien only got engaged to Edith before the war and that was that. No looking or swiping left or right like these days.

I hate that! No pretenses sounds wonderful. If only we were still like that!
