On MLK Day, Rachel was aggressively tailed by some assface in a pick-up truck apparently upset over her Obama bumper sticker. To date, I've been called "nigger lover" in a parking lot and have had my fair share of interstate rednecks acting like they were going to rear-end me.

After Rachel's episode, it occurred to us that being African-American in the South would be like being required to wear an Obama t-shirt and have an Obama bumper sticker on your car wherever you went, regardless of whether you wanted to or not. That little thought experiment really makes it palpable how prevalent racism is in America today. Of course, that still wouldn't even be close to what African-Americans have to go through. Scary, really.

Another classmate said that she wishes there were more scholarships for "regular people"- not just scholarships for minorities. In my opinion her statement is a good example of this type of weird racism that I've been seeing a lot of lately, especially in educated, middle class white people- "I'm not a racist, I believe everyone deserves an equal opportunity in life....as long as I still get mine first". White people have noooo idea how privileged they really are (including myself- the only difference I guess is that I'm aware of my inherent inability to empathize in addition to sympathize ( ... )
