One more day in the Dean's office, then a day off! This has been really stressful - the Dean is so severe! I get nervous just transfering a phone call to him, and I'm so afraid I'm going to cut someone off. I'm planning a party for my 12 (assistants). Nothing specifically holiday related since they're such a diverse group (I figure its just bad form to try to pawn off Santa Claus to kids who go home to Iran and Saudi Arabia for winter break) but there will be gift bags and food. I wish I could do more, but we currently have no party/reward budget so its all out of pocket.

We always have a holiday party for all of the students in the library (about 35 of them), but we try not to make it too Christmassy as most of our students are international too (thankfully it doesn't fall on ramadan this year!). I always try to get my two something, but I also have to pay out of pocket, so by the time I buy for family I don't always have much to give them! They're always appreciative though, and it makes up for the lack of respect they get around here most of the year.

Back when I was a student assistant my supervisor (who's desk I've been sitting at all week) told me that no one in the library was more important than the student assistants, and she drew a pyramid with the Dean on top and the students at tht bottom and said "See, this place would just collapse without them." That always made me feel less like a peon and more like a fellow employee.
