State of the Garden

I haven't posted pictures of my garden lately, and it's changed so much!

Remember the pasque flower? The blooms went from this:

to this:

Isn't that neat? I'm glad I didn't deadhead those blooms. I really need to write myself a little cheat sheet of whether or not to clip the flowers I've planted.

One poppy bloomed, just one flower with four petals. It didn't last long, but it was a fantastic scarlet color with a satiny texture.

Things are going well in the new front section. I had to weed like crazy and then put down landscaping cloth, because it turns out that birdseed? It's made of seeds! Seeds that grow into little sprouts, especially on fresh, thinly mulched soil. Go figure.

These little pincushion flowers are blooming well:

The lilies Kurtis planted when he first moved in are growing like mad this year - they've really settled in.

By next week the asiatic lilies that have probably been in front of the house forever should be in full bloom. Last year I thinned them down like crazycakes and they look a lot healthier this year - the blooms are standing taller and there's less dead stuff in the leaves.

My mom gave me a buttercup, and now every time I see it I get that song in my head. So far there's only one blossom, but I think in a few days the rest of the buds will bloom. They're really a sweet little flower, aren't they?

I haven't finished the side yard garden, yet. It's coming along in fits and starts, with lots of missteps along the way. I've learned a lot from this section, though. I'm hoping to gradually turn most of the yard into something other than grass. It would be nice to have a little country style garden, with little paths and lots to look at, and lots of happy little critters running around.

My mistake this year, was starting too small. I know! That sounds crazy! But damn, is it ever hard to dig up turf (without wasting a lot of good topsoil). I could have rented a tiller, but I figured the space was too small to warrant the hassle of picking up the machine and learning to use it.

Next year I'm just gonna rent the tiller and till a large enough space to make it worth while!

Meanwhile, I'm putting off digging the rest of this section. Rather than try to explain it all, click the picture to go through to flickr, where there are notes on the plans. I'm feeling lazy.

Thanks for looking at my pictures. It makes all the work of gardening worth the effort if other people enjoy it, too.
