Ok so last weekend i had the time of my life in Santorini. i took over 200 pictures and had to seriously fight the urge to put them all in here. but i could only cut it down by half... i have a problem, i know.
we took a ferry at 7am friday morning (we didnt get in until 3pm)
Me, laura and megan
one of the ports on our trip
our first view of santorini
tell me it's not crazy to look at all those buildings abuot to fall off hte face of the cliff
we went to the beach as soon as we got to our hostel (which was literally 30 feet from the beach)
then we had dinner at one of the little restaurantsd and bars all along the beach
view from the restaurant
chillin by the hotel pool friday night before we went out
at midnight we found this completely deserted bar on the beach, but we knew that the cowhide couches meant a good time was waiting to be had
we call this picture "BETHANY (and friends)"
we made a pact to get free drinks that night. and i took it very seriously, judging by my face.
this was actually me trying to stall before taking a shot because i knew i was already way too drunk to handle it
for instance, i ran outside and yelled "take a picture of me next to this BARREL!" way cool.
next we made our way to the full moon bar for their vodka and red bull party. which was actually 15 greek people sitting in booths in the bar talking. not much of a party, according to us.
so the 5 of us got up and started dancing while all the greeks around us just stared in disbelief.
however within half an hour we had like 75 people in there dancing on the tables and sweating up a storm.
i got sassy
too cool for school
this woman was not diggin the 40 year old sweaty shirtless man
neither were laura and megan. this might be my favorite picture from santorini.
by the way, this is our hostel. it cost me about 11.50 US dollars a night to stay there. sweet deal, huh?
our room.
when we got back to our hostel, we found that someone had slipped a greek tarot card under our door, for what reason i dont know. the picture is of a naked woman carrying a basketful of penises, if that helps explain things.
in the morning we got up and waited over an hour for a bus that never showed up. however an old man with donkey and children in tow did walk by, so the wasted time was definitely worth it.
later on we went to the beach and wandered around the tiny shops, which led us to discover this gorgeous church.
an australian man asked us to watch his pantsless daughter for him while he climbed up into the tower to take pictures. later we saw the two of them having dinner on the beach. she still had no underwear on.
that night us ladies got dressed to the nines and went ot the tourist=y town on the island ot have a nice dinner, watch the sunset, and meet up with other CYAthens students to go to the local American bar.
Santorini police are just like NDSP, wouldnt you say?
the town of Fira at night
we ate dinner on this private terrace overlooking the cliff
the evening caled for fancy girly drinks. this one drink cost as much as a night in my hostel. ouch.
after dinner we shopped for a few hours and then found some steps to hang out and wait for the results of the ND-Michigan game. we felt just like high schoolers smoking and drinking behind the building during study hall.
then we went to Murphy's Bar, which is apparently where all the germans, americans, and australians in santorini go for a good time. i danced on my first table here.
dane and jared eiffel-towering my roommates like pros.
then we left to go back to our friday night bar near our hotel. on hte way we met Lucky, a greek man who just ranout of his souvlaki restaurant and danced with matt on the street.
i love this picture of us waiting for cabs. right to left is me, jared, sarah, sara, megan, matt, dane, and clare
well when we got to the cowhide bar, we realized that we were the only people in that town on a saturday night. we pretty much had the entire place to ourselves.
clare rocks
hey raise your hand if you think jared needs to go ahead and pass out
nice
and then when laura said "hey let me take a picture with you jared", he automatically lifted up his shirt.
sarah only stayed awake for about 10 minutes.
eventually everyone either went home or passed out on the couches, so dane and i walked all of 15 feet to the beach and stood in the ocean and looked at the stars. it was one of the most beautiful things i'd ever seen, really. it defintely took the sting out of not being in the States.
the next morning we packed up our stuff and went to see the ancient ruins at Akrotiri. it's an entire town that's been completely excavated and is open to the public.
then we hiked a few minutes to see santorini's red beach, which was also unbelievably gorgeous. the pictures really cannot do justice to the color of the water or the rocks.
this is the volcano next to santorini that exploded in like 800 BC, blowing off a fourth of Santorini and making all the cliffs that the island is famous for.
and finally, sunset on the ferry ride home:
the end of santorini :(
On Monday night, the girls and I went to see a London ballet company put on Romeo and Juilet at the Acropolis theater. It was amazing, and I couldnt get over the fact that we were watching a 500 year old story in a 2500 year old theater. It really blows your mind to look around and see so much modernity juxtaposed with antiquity.
Then on Tuesday it was our friend Matt's 21st birthday, and although in Europe we're all already legal anyways, you know we celebrated it. Break out the absynthe.
tiny gourmet cakes and the birthday boy
Dane, me, Lisa and Desi (two of my roommates)
Jared and Matt at the leg bar
dont remember this at all
definitely dont remember this
so unattractive
ohhhh i had to include this just to show you how weird greece can be. what youre looking at is a dj booth directly in front of a neon "shrine" if you will. theyre all pictures of mary and jesus with glowing lights all around them, and im pretty sure some of them rotate and spin. but i couldve been drunk, so dont take my word for it.
pretty much the dirtiest place you could ever pass out in
kind of feels like the Depression
so at about 4:30 in the morning, we went back to their place and sure enough, continued drinking
i loved that the first thing everyone did when we walked in the door was take off their clothes and stuff their faces with greek food
that's electronic yahtzee that he's playing. way to live it up on your 21st, matt.
oh my gosh i look so drunk. appropriately.
modeling hte sunglasses
i think this is the most precious picture ever.
i really wish i knew what was going on here, and why sarah is about to bite dane in the ass.
everyone either went home or went to bed, but dane sarah and i shut off the lights and had a dance party for about an hour. i felt like a rebellious 15 year old. fortunately there arent any pictures of me doing the above.
i think this is a good way to leave things.
c ya.
