It's never easy. She never gets used to it. Everyone meets Death in their own way, and even after all this time, they can still surprise her.
And this one... She really doesn't even need to be here. He's not actually dying, he never is, but she's always watched him anyway. She's always been there, even if he never saw her.
She tells herself she's only there to observe. There's no need to step in. This is only a symbolic death after all. There's nothing for her to do here. He doesn't even need to see her.
He staggers in, and to her eyes he's already glowing faintly. He's alone, which doesn't seem right somehow, not for this one. Still, she holds herself back. He may not even remember her, after all. He might not remember a dance on the sand, on an island with no name.
She reminds herself that she'll see him again. Some of his past regenerations haven't happened yet for her, and she might even see this version of him again. They have a date many years from now, and she knows if he remembers her, he'll be there.
He's moving around the console, and his hands are drifting over its curves as if to say goodbye. He looks up, and there's something desperate in his gaze. He looks so sad and lost as he glances around, as if he wants to memorize a place he'll never see again.
She's seen death in all its forms. She's seen everyone from hours-old infants to erstwhile immortals meet their ends. She's even seen this process before, for this man, but somehow it's different this time. For the first time in a long time, it feels personal.
And then she hears him say "I don't want to go." And there's so much anguish in his voice that her heart breaks for him.
Before she even realizes what's she's doing, she's standing in front of him.
He's never been one to follow the rules, so it only seems right to break her own rules for him. He looks so scared. For a moment she's afraid she's too late, and then his eyes meet hers, and all she can do is give him a smile to let him know he's not alone.
There's a moment of recognition in his eyes, and then the glow overtakes him.
Death holds out her hand.
The TARDIS explodes into fire, but they're already gone.
