The majority of Haruhi's personality can pretty much be summed up with the following:

As a character Haruhi is rather sarcastic, cynical and the complete opposite of what one would expect of a shoujo heroin. Despite the fact that she attends a high class academy where she is surrounded by rich and handsome men, Haruhi doesn't seem to react to these factors in the way one would expect. She doesn't give a damn about her physical appearance and as such doesn't care how other people view her. When we first see her she's dressed like a scruffy nerd with short wild hair and big unattractive glasses that hide the majority of her face. Because of this the host club members as well as the rest of the school all assume she is a male student. In fact, it isn't revealed to the viewers that Haruhi is a girl until Tamaki walks in on her changing at the end of the first episode. This revelation causes him to flip out questioning why on earth she never said anything about her gender sooner. Haruhi simply replies that to her it doesn't matter that people thought she was a guy, she feels it's the person inside that truly counts.
Haruhi's lacking care for outward appearances is more than likely influenced majorly by her only living parental figure. At the young age of five Haruhi's mother passed away, leaving her father to raise her on his own. Unlike the typical dad, Haruhi's chooses to work at a drag queen bar under the name "Ranka". Seeing your father walk around dressing and acting like a full fledged woman is bound to influence how you view others and the world. Because despite his quirky appearance, Haruhi still loves and respects her father and supports his unusual career choices.
So you would think that working at a host club where you're surrounded by handsome guys all day would be the ultimate fantasy for a hormonal teenage girl. However, Haruhi doesn't seemed phased by this at all. In fact, she doesn't quite understand why girls would pay to sit around and be doted upon in the first place. To her something like host club isn't necessary. She frequently makes crude comments about how ridiculous all the random activities the club partakes in are and she also doesn't get the appeal of each host's "special talents". However, Haruhi proves true to her word from the first episode and once she starts getting to know each host member, she begins to appreciate them for who they are and the Host club together as a whole.
Our dear heroine is also quite unfortunately oblivious to all things related to the opposite sex. Countless times throughout the series several of the host club members try to flirt with her though their attempts all prove unsuccessful in arousing any sort of affectionate reaction in return. Haruhi tends to overlook the guys romantic gestures and in some cases (especially with Tamaki) she'll even go as far as to coldly shoot them down without the slightest bit of remorse. To sum it up; Haruhi is in more of a sort of innocent limbo stage with her hormones and just isn't interested in searching for romance at this stage of her life. Despite this it is clear that the more she bonds with him, Haruhi starts developing romantic feelings for Tamaki. Though neither of the two realize their feelings for what they truly are at present.
People can certainly tell at first glance that her initial appearance does in fact allude to a lot more of her personality. Haruhi is what some people may refer to as a book worm and got into Ouran Academy on a full scholarship requiring her to maintain straight A grades and remain top of her class. As such Haruhi holds studying and class work above anything else regarding her daily life and commits herself to her studies as much as possible. Another insight one might take from her scruffy outfit is her lack of wealth. She is in fact considered poor and such can be seen through her other make shift outfits she adorns during other parts of the series as well. She is known to frequently comment on special sales down at the super market and obsesses over anything free. Which means she'll pretty much be in heaven in Vatheon seeing how practically everything is free of charge (Except for that new card thingy for Nostalgia Nook ;;). Her poor financial standing adds to her dilemma of braking the host club's expensive vase at the beginning and is an additional reason as to why she must join the club in order to repay her debt, since she could never hope to pay it off otherwise. Haruhi complies without much fuss over the idea itself because despite how much she dislikes the club at first, it really wouldn't sit well with her to go without paying back the debt she owes. Adding on to the fact that Haruhi is a hard worker and will strive to succeed in whatever activities she partakes in, voluntary or not.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :

♞ Very Independent; which works both for her and against her as she has the tendency to do everything on her own without relying on others for help.
♞ Extremely blunt. Sometimes in a good way... sometimes in a negative way. SHE WILL STEP ON YOUR TOES IF YOU TRY TO TANGO WITH HER.
♞ Easily bribed with food... two words: fancy tuna.
♞ Brontophobia (Severely afraid of thunderstorms! ;;)
♞ Horomonally Oblivious

Is this one of those new enclosed theme parks like the tropical one Kyouya's family owns? That must be it.
If someone could just point me in the direction of the exit I'd be really grateful. Underwater cities aren't exactly my cup of tea.
