for Remus

Tonks was fidgeting. She did that when she got nervous, started pulling on her hair and playing with the hem of her shirt. She'd come bursting into their hut all ready to spill the news to Remus... and he wasn't there. So now she was just waiting. And fidgeting ( Read more... )

"Hello, sweetheart," Remus replied, smiling as he saw her. He thought she seemed nervous, as her greeting was a bit more enthused than normal, but he figured the cause of that would be revealed in due course.

He lifted her chin gently with one finger to kiss her hello. "Hot one today, isn't it?" he commented, pulling off the button-up shirt he was wearing open over a white undershirt.

"It is!" Tonks said brightly. Perhaps a little too brightly. "I was thinking that exact same this morning, because when I came back in from breakfast I decided to change my shirt and wear a tank top - " Since she probably wouldn't be fitting into them pretty soon. "But really, it's not that it helped much. You know, that lovely priest has been keeping the kitchen stocked in iced tea, which is, you know, a bit of an acquired taste - very American, don't you think? But it's awfully nice when it's hot outside, and I don't imagine that the weather's getting much different, unless we have another one of those random cold flashes again, though that doesn't seem very likely." Oh yes, she was babbling. A lot. "And I'm glad you're home because the thing is, I'm pregnant."

There. That was her strategy - ripping it off like a bandaid. Of course, she'd said so much so quickly that she wasn't sure he even registered that last bit.

"Yes, those Americans quite like their tea iced, apparently," he began to reply, "though it's not all that terrible once you get used..."

He trailed off, blinking, as he registered the final thing she'd said. Shaking his head as though to clear it, he ran one hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, that last bit - it sounded just like you'd said you're pregnant."

Tonks bit her lip. "Did it? Right. Well. I am. Pregnant, I mean."

Maybe she should have told him as soon as she suspected. But really, what good would that have done? At least this way she was sure, and his reaction, good or bad, was for the real thing...

"Ultrasound machine...I know I've heard that term before, but I don't quite recall what it does," Remus said, kissing Tonks' temple before resting his chin lightly on the top of her head. "And I'm sure you'll be a wonderful mum." He only wished Tonks' parents could have been there - Andy would have surely been over the moon about a granddaughter, once she'd got used to the idea that her daughter was married to Remus, that is.

"I... Remus..." She lifted her head to look up at him, a slight panicked expression on her face. "I don't know anything about babies!"

"And I do?" he replied gently, smiling. "The only baby I've spent any significant amount of time with was Harry, and that was nearly two decades ago."

He met Tonks' eyes, giving her a reassuring look. "Neither of us may have a tonne of experience in this area, but I think we'll be fine. And we certainly won't be lacking for assistance." It wasn't that Remus wasn't nervous - he was terrified, in fact - but he was determined to stay calm and strong for his wife. And at the moment, the excitement over being a father was outweighing the fear.

"I love you," Tonks sighed, and wrapped her arms around him again. "There's no one else that I could possibly imagine wanting to father my children."
