Definitely look for old watches at thrift stores that you can take apart and use the gears.

I'm still new to the Steampunk costuming myself so I'm no help really. I've tabled the costume for next D*C.

Good luck!

I've posted on Freecycle for a few pieces, and I'm hitting the flea market down the street Saturday to see what I can find. I'm SURE I can find some old watches and costume jewelry there.

I'd LOVE to put together some kind of goggle-y apparatus out of bits of metal, clockwork pieces, and leather to put over my glasses.

Remember, just sticking gears on stuff doesn't make it steampunk! :P Although in "my" steampunk world, I can say (to justify it) that it's sort of post-war, "country's fallen on hard times so we use whatever bits of things we can find to make our clothes and jewelery."

Chimney sweeps could be cute, especially for the little girls! Paint soot smudges on their faces, put their hair in mussed-up pigtails... I recommend watching Mary Poppins for research!

I think it was Threadbanger that had a tutorial for making goggles. Actually, they did a whole steampunk week, I'm sure you could check those videos out.

I'm in steamfashion here, which is a huuuge community on, duh, steampunk fashion. Check out any of the tags that look interesting (but check the rules before you post).

Yeah, I've got a couple of ideas; My current idea in my head is a basic sort of men'sdress vest, poofy blouse, and some carefully placed jewelry. I've asked on my Freecycle, and i'm hitting the flea market Saturday.

I've got a couple of ideas, but I guess it really depends on what I find. :) This is kinda fun... I like being on a treasure hunt to build my costume out of whatever I can find. It has a very steampunk spirit to it!

OOOOOH! That community has already paid off. Someone posted cheap shoes, and LOOK!

At Target! I'll have to see if they're sold locally, or if I'll have to order online.

I like the boots! I have a little pair of lace-up ankle boots that I got for my job interviews. They're great for this sort of look! And that's a good price, too.

They'll probably make purists blush but they're made from plastic milk cartons and duct tape, so they're cheap and they'll do the job for D*C! Do-it-yourself steampunk goggles from instructables.com (http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-realistic-Steampunk-Airship-Goggles/).

I'm making them for my outfit, which is basically two skirts that I bought in a sale in a High Street store, one bundled up over the other, plus a white blouse, black belt and a straw boater from the fancy-dress box, all stuff I already own. I'm going to make a bustle pad for the overdress - again, something cheap and easy that I found online. Oh, and a modded popgun (£2 from the cheap toy store in the village). It won't win prizes but it's cheap and it'll look good and I'll have fun wearing it - what more does a girl need? :D

Those look fabulous! I'm going to get some scrap leather from somewhere and see what I can do about making something to fit over my regular glasses. I'm actually going to be buying new glasses soon, so I might just turn these into my steampunk goggles! I have ideas, we'll just have to see how they come together. I'm REALLY looking forward to SAturday, now!

I'm going to use this as my brainstorm dump.

I juts remembered that I used to have a pair of fingerless leather gloves. I can only find one, but I'm fairly sure the other is around... and even if I can't find but one, the asymmetry of a single leather fingerless glove appeals to me.

I'm also playing around with hair ideas... right now, my hair's damn near waist length, and I want to play it up with assorted braids, maybe some metal bits here and there. Everyone always does the victorian up-do, but I want something different, and a little wild. Something distantly inspired by this:

I've been using this image as one of my characters from my steampunk novel. But the hair just intrigues me, and I wanna do something a little feral like that.

OOOOH braiding in silver craft wire. THAT I can do. Especially if I can find some antique beads for threading the braids through.

I've just raided the house, and found a whole bunch of really useful stuff! I think that's the best thing about steampunk... that you can turn everyday stuff into costume pieces! I doubt i'll use EVERYTHING I've found, but I've got some real potential here.

From Nathan's wedding tux (hasn't been worn since)

The roo sack is great! I use it for some of my Pern costumes, too. Love the wedding tux, I could really see that teamed with the other clothes you mention for a steampunk vibe. I think that's what's fun about steampunk ... you can really use your imagination; you're not locked into a set "look", such as when you cosplay a particular character from a TV show or film or whatever.
