Everyone may call Tegoshi selfish and think that he doesn’t notice any of the nice things Koyama is always doing for him, but he does notice. In fact he knows about every single one of those nice things, remembers them all and holds each of them close to his heart. It’s just that sometimes he doesn’t say anything out loud about them because he knows that if he did, it would somehow ruin the sentiment behind Koyama’s small gestures of kindness, would call unwanted attention to them and suddenly render them ridiculous or superfluous.
Tegoshi knows that sometimes, the only way to properly appreciate a person as gentle as Koyama is to do so silently.
Ever since they debuted Koyama has had a Valentine’s Day tradition that he thinks he is keeping a secret from everybody else; every year he sneaks into the jimusho early on Valentine’s Day morning to visit the staff in the mailroom as they are busy counting out the hundreds of thousands of chocolate boxes and cards that have arrived that morning, all from girls and women around the country who want to make sure their favorite idol is remembered today.
He greets the staff cheerfully and helps them sort the gifts, offers to help carry NewS’s to their dressing room before the other members arrive.
Tegoshi knows that every year, Koyama carefully counts the numbers in his pile and the numbers in the others’ piles; he makes sure he always has the least.
He thinks it’s a secret but Tegoshi has known ever since the first time he did it; when, on a Valentine’s Day barely a few months after NewS had been debuted, Tegoshi magically received more chocolates than Koyama.
“Ah, isn’t that great, Tegoshi?” Koyama had said with a warm voice, “Keep working hard and the numbers will grow even higher, ne?”
Shige had snorted at Koyama and said, “Work hard yourself first… it’s sad that you’ve been here so much longer than him and you still get noticed less than him!”
Koyama had only laughed at Shige and said, “You’re right, ne. Shige, Shige, share some of yours with me!”
“No!”
Even if Shige hadn’t noticed that first year Tegoshi had; he’d known right away that someone as new and plain as him couldn’t possibly beat someone as gentle as Koyama in popularity.
But rather than be indignant about Koyama’s charity Tegoshi had been strangely touched; he remembers to this day that more than the love of the fans, he had felt the love of one of the members that morning.
He promised Koyama in his heart that he would continue to work hard.
Since then, Tegoshi has started a Valentine’s Day tradition of his own as well; he stays late the night before and once all the other members are gone, goes downstairs and bats his eyes at the security guard in the lobby as cutely as he can. He always gets the master key without much effort and sneaks into the mailroom with a brightly decorated pink box tucked under his arm.
Inside there is a giant, heart-shaped chocolate with “Kei-chan, ganbatte!” written in white frosting on it that he made at home last night with his mother’s help; he knows that in the morning, Koyama will open it with a big smile and then offer to share it with all the other members, even though every single one of them will have gotten more boxes of candy than him that day.
Everyone will have a bite anyway, and as they eat it they will all tease Yamapi about how fat he is going to become from always getting the most. Between the six of them, they will have chocolate readily available in the dressing room for the next six months and Massu will be the one who eats most of it.
By now, everyone also knows about Koyama’s not-so-secret Valentine’s secret and won’t say anything about it; Tegoshi is fairly sure that they all know about his as well, even Koyama.
But they won’t say anything about that either.
Koyama is the one who taught NewS that the true meaning of member-ai is kindness in the smallest actions.
Tegoshi is the one who teaches them that sometimes, to appreciate it, all you have to do is enjoy it.

On Valentine’s Day, a letter arrives for Uchi in the mail. Well, many letters arrive for him in the mail, but there is one in particular that makes him laugh when he opens it.
Happy V!
Someday after tomorrow, let’s share a drink together.
-K
Uchi tucks the letter into his back pocket with a snort and thinks that out of everyone this could have happened to, he is glad that he got to share the same crushing, horrible trials with Kusano right there beside him the whole way.
He likes that Kusano is undefeatable.

Shige always finds it a little bit ironic that he has chocolates to deliver every Valentine’s Day (and to his groupmates at that, like they all don’t get enough already).
It’s embarrassing.
Even more so, his mother always makes sure to make an extra special big bag for Ryo because she’s Ryo’s particular fan. The fact will never stop mortifying Shige to death.
Ryo loves it; he’ll always stand in the doorway to their dressing room on Valentine’s, waiting for Shige to arrive. He’s usually smirking and has his hand held out expectantly.
Shige always sighs helplessly and gives him the chocolate; “STOP SMIRKING,” he’ll complain, and Ryo will comply by cackling at him instead.
This year the day doesn’t start out any differently than any of those past Valentine’s; Shige’s mother stops him at the door with six brightly wrapped plastic baggies tied with disgustingly festive pink and red and white ribbons. Each of them has one of the members’ names on it (including his own, what the hell), and she tells him to have a good day at work and to pass those out to the others before they melt.
Then his manager’s car arrives with Tegoshi inside (just a little bit late this morning) and Shige leaves after his mother kisses his cheek.
“Here,” he says to Tegoshi in the car, and thrusts the package with Tegoshi’s name on it at him.
“Uwah, thank you for the chocolates, Shige!” Tegoshi chirps, looking ecstatic.
“THIS IS NOT FROM ME. IT IS FROM MY MOM,” Shige clarifies, with extra emphasis to show he is simply stating a fact and not sulking at all.
Tegoshi giggles and kisses Shige’s cheek. “Jaa, then pass that on to her for me later, ne?”
Shige sputters.
~~~~~
When they get to the dressing room twenty minutes later Ryo isn’t waiting at the door.
“Huh,” Shige says to himself, and thinks that maybe Ryo is late. Which is good, it will give him some more time to mentally prepare for the crap he is going to get all day because Ryo’s bag is notably heavier than everyone’s, even Shige’s own. From his own mother.
Koyama is already in the dressing room-as expected-when Shige and Tegoshi arrive, smiling appreciatively at all the boxes everyone got. “Yappari, Yamapi got the most again, ne!” he chuckles. “But Tego-nyan got the second most this year!”
“Wah, really?” Tegoshi marvels, and bounces off to verify the count.
Shige sighs and wordlessly tosses the package he is holding with Koyama’s name on it at his best friend and goes to sit down at the couch.
“Uwah, thanks, Shige!” Koyama cheers.
“IT’S NOT FROM ME.”
Five minutes later Ryo arrives looking cranky rather than smug; it’s definitely a Valentine’s Day first.
Shige is-naturally- the most surprised out of everyone.
“Ryo-chan, is something wrong?” Koyama worries, and hopes that his friend didn’t get dumped or rejected or something today. How horrible!
Ryo ignores him.
“You,” he says to Shige instead, and waves him over. “Come with me.”
Tegoshi and Koyama share a puzzled look, but wisely decide not to say anything in light of the storm clouds currently circling Ryo’s head.
“Um…” Shige begins, and throws a panicked look at Koyama. The older boy just shrugs in reply, helpless.
“Hurry up!” Ryo insists, and looks like he is on the verge of glaring.
Shige automatically scrambles to his feet and follows Ryo out the door; it’s one of those things he can’t help about himself that he wishes he could. He always gets pulled along by everyone else’s pace.
Once they are in the hallway, Ryo surreptitiously looks left, then right, then left again before talking.
They are the only ones there.
“Er…is something wrong, Nishikido-kun?” Shige begins, and is almost glad he has his mother’s extra giant Ryo-love chocolates with him right now; hopefully they will cheer the older boy up so that he doesn’t pummel Shige like he looks like he’s about to. “Um, I have uh…”
Ryo is the first one to thrust something out at Shige.
“Here,” he mutters, sounding pained.
Shige blinks.
Looks down.
It’s a small, silvery gift bag with pink glittery hearts on it.
“E-eh?”
Ryo glowers. “My sister,” he begins, in carefully measured tones, “thinks that you look really good with your hair like that now.”
Shige stares.
“Hurry up and take it!” Ryo demands, shaking the bag impatiently. He can’t look Shige in the eye.
Shige grins. Takes the chocolate. “Thank you, Nishikido-kun,” he says, politely.
Ryo’s lip curls. “It’s FROM MY SISTER.” Pause. “And stop smirking, you ass.”
Shige complies by cackling at him instead.
Yamapi appreciates all the chocolates he gets on Valentine’s Day but doesn’t think chocolate is one of his favorite foods; he knows from experience that there is only so much of the stuff a man can take before he won’t be able to touch it for another whole year.
It’s just…too sweet.
“Wouldn’t it be great,” Massu begins, seemingly out of the blue as he bites into a large chunk of homemade fudge, “if instead of just chocolate, people could also give nikuman to show their love on Valentine’s Day?”
Everyone stops to stare at Massu, who smiles back at them guilelessly.
No one really knows how to respond to that.
Except for Yamapi, who unexpectedly bursts out laughing.
Later, he runs down to the konbini and buys six nikuman.
“We can do it like this,” he explains to a mystified Massu as he hands one bun to each the members, “since this is the love of men, ne.”
Massu bites into his nikuman and nods at Yamapi like what the older boy is saying makes absolute, perfect, flawless sense.
Between the two of them, it kind of does.
But Ryo still calls them morons anyway, around a mouthful of meatbun.
Taka opens the mysterious oversized envelope his manager had handed him this morning and promptly slaps a hand to his forehead.
Inside is a hand-made (heart-shaped) card with eight signatures and one line of text.
Dare ni mo makenai.
He thinks the show he plays that night is one of his best to date.
