From your past year of writing, what was...

The Best:

UH. I'm going to have to go with Journey to the West if only because it was a small part of something so much bigger and I think I felt that consciously the entire time I was writing it. Rather than just be lazy at certain intervals or glean over something else that I didn't find personally interesting, I kind of approached it with the sense that I was getting to play with someone else's baby so I better not drop the baby or mentally scar the baby or dropkick the baby to see how far the baby would fly. I'm not nearly as careful with my own things, fic and otherwise, so being given the chance (being trusted) by these people I really admire to play well with others really made me conscious of every little thing I was doing. Also I work better under pressure from deadlines. I don't even know why that is.

Most Underappreciated by the Universe:

Probably Fixer Upper? I mean, it is technically Samelia so I didn't think anyone but the person who requested it would read it, but even still, I kind of find it hilarious how much SPN fandom hates it when the bros are in relationships outside of each other. I mean, at this point Amelia is already pretty much a non-entity and yet, and yet, so much animosity even though she doesn't even really matter anymore.

Most Fun to Write:

In general I have a lot of fun writing remixes, so obviously, as my one sort-of remix of the year, So You're Expecting ended up being the most fun, basically because I took juin's thoughtfully laid out template in Breaking Common Laws in Twos and Threes and Hulk-smashed it into something less clever that I could work with. Basically it was like fingerpainting all over someone else's wall. It was awesome, I felt a little guilty afterwards, but totally worth it in the end.

Sexiest:

Oddly enough also So You're Expecting, if only because it is probably the only fic of the year that actually mentions sex, and the characters having it. Uh. I still have the mental maturity of a thirteen-year-old boy I guess.

Holy Crap, That's Wrong Even For You:

Clearly this fic is winning all the awards, because So You're Expecting is DEFINITELY THE MOST WRONG THING I WROTE ALL YEAR, followed by proxy with .

Fic That shifted Your Own Perceptions of the Characters:

Probably
Men of a Certain Age, because I remember watching Teen Wolf and thinking Chris Argent was HORRIBLE at his job. Like, ridiculously bad at it, and if the Winchesters saw him they would punch him in the face bad. But then I started writing this and all I could think as I was doing it was that maybe he looked bad because his entire family is batshit and he's like, the most weak-willed one of them, so he just kind of gets forcibly dragged into their shenanigans. Like I honestly had this really long internal monologue written in the first draft where he waxed poetic about how Victoria killed herself because she was stronger than him and because he was too weak to fight for her to live, to force her to. And now that's just kind of in my head, that he's this reasonable, skilled guy who just can't seem to control his family. Human, basically.

Hardest to Do:

Definitely Safe Place, because at the time I wrote it I still had so many feelings about it. Most of which included wanting to smash Yamapi's stupid dead-eyed face into the nearest wall (which I would still do in a heartbeat BTW). But as this was an auction fic, I had to write it sympathetically for the person who requested it, and so here I was, writing from the perspective of people who are much more magnanimous than me. NEWS is full of good people, and I am not a good person a lot of the time, so trying to find that balance past all my rage was basically the worst thing ever. I'm a little better about the whole thing now though, mostly because holy shit NEWS sounds better without Yamapi and Ryo. Yamapi in particular, because Massu taking over his parts is kind of an obvious HUGE upgrade quality wise. LOL

Biggest Disappointment:

For me personally, I think Date Night probably, because I wrote it not knowing where it was going to go into the RR timeline as a DVD extra and the emotional tenor of the whole thing just completely doesn't fit with where the season was in the story at all. It's just completely jarring when you go from the original episodes to that extra and I probably should have toned down the ridiculousness a little.

Most Telling:

Definitely Picking up Strays (And Other Important Things), because I have a complete weakness for good fathers and BOY DOES IT SHOW IN THIS FIC. It also kind of shows my entire philosophy on how much I feel Teen Wolf needs a real live adult to help take the reins too, I guess.

Overall Thoughts:

I did not write a lot this year. I want to blame work and the fact that I just discovered I have a really bad Vitamin D deficiency, but those are stupid excuses. On the plus side I got to 30k of a novel, wrote a TV pilot, and wrote a few Teahouse fics exclusively for Emily, so the numbers aren't as bad as what you strictly see up top.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?

HEY TEEN WOLF. I blame the fic contest, because I basically mainlined the show in 4 days after I heard about that to write for it, if only because the idea of making a creator read something I wrote tickled me. I had all these ridiculous ideas for how I would make them read horrible, horrible things, but in the end I wimped out and I submitted Look at Your life, Look At Your Choices, which clearly bored the readers more than anything. IF THERE IS ANOTHER ONE I WILL NOT LOSE MY COURAGE I SWEAR. There will be crack. And possibly a boyband AU.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?

Oh god I'm so lame, but probably More Flies With Honey, because I just really want a SPN/Avengers crossover, okay? Like I had these completely ridiculous ideas about SHIELD recruiting Cas after his stint at godhood and then his subsequent attempts to make up for it (he and Natasha could bond, right?). Plus I thought it might be extremely hilarious for him to get into theological debates with Thor about how he's not really a god and then hang out with Steve afterwards, not getting pop culture references. But then I got lazy and just did a short...thing, but the idea of Cas and Loki and their shared experience in failed godhood kind of was enough in the end anyway.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

A couple? I tried some perspectives I wasn't really comfortable with (Scott, Serious!Sam), and I tried Sterek, which was intimidating, considering all the very good writers it has. But other than that, I was pretty tame, mostly because I only did this to try and forget of the cess pool that is work.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?

Well I definitely want to at least round out the Sterek cereal series as a trilogy, maybe see if I can do a big bang this year, since I COMPLETELY FAILED THIS YEAR. Other than that, I really need to finish my novel, if only to say that I finished it. (It is horrible so far.) I STILL haven't finished a movie for a really long time so I would like to do that. Also maybe talk to Em and CC about doing an extra for one of the Teahouse chapters, which technically counts as fanfic I guess. LOL
