Sherlock

My latest fandom love is BBC's Sherlock; S2 began airing on January 1. I'm still processing my thoughts on it, but I can say I loved the first episode and can't wait to see the rest. (I believe there will be three, each about 90 minutes long, so in American terms it's more like a "mini series.")

But I'm having a little bit of a crisis over the fact ( Read more... )

I agree that Sherlock (which I also enjoy immensely) is a male dominated story, but I think I can do with it because it's classic material. The original text is sexist and to undo that can damage the story. I think sex change works quite well if people are willing to go that far (see BSG) but for example entering female OCs or filling existing ones out more often fails than not ( see LoTR).

I'm usually willing to make exceptions for old source material, it bugs me far less than when modern shows do it all over again for no reason at all. It also helps that they queered it up somehow. Any break with heteronormativity makes me feel more at home.

Agree about the measurements and Moriarty though, that was a tad too much.

Agreed, on all counts. In fact it's probably the way it is subverting heteronormativity in some way that draws me in to begin with (and even if with a purely platonic read of Sherlock and John, just the fact that their relationship matters so much is a subversion), so thanks for pointing that out!

one of the S1 episodes - so.much.orientalism.

OMG yes. That episode made me cringe all the way through. I realize it's an adaptation of a nineteenth century story, but the orientalism could have been toned down by a good 60% without impacting the storytelling. (Sidebar: Sarah doing John's work for him without comment after he falls asleep on the job, and then still agreeing to go out with him? *eyeroll*)

Thank you for the story recs! I will look those up.

OH. I want to remix The Blind Banker with American gangsters in place of the Black Lotus. Although that probably gets into (a)another set of racial stereotypes, if they're African-American gangsters, or (b) erasing characters of color and replacing them with white characters, so it might not be better in the end. Hmm. Well, anyway, I just write fanfic.

Have you checked out "Once Upon a Time?" I was skeptical of it at first, but it's kept me reeled in so far. There are plenty of interesting female characters and lots of femslash potential, although the imaginary pairing everyone seems interested in (Emma/Regina) doesn't work for me, at least not yet. But there are other possibilities, one of which I'm working on a story for right now. :-)

Three episodes in and I am well and truly hooked. I mostly ship Emma/Mary, although it bothers me just a little that Mary's alter-ego Snow White is baby!Emma's mother. ANYWAY. SHOW. I like it.

Haven't watched S2 yet (my family wants to watch it together) but yeah, that's definitely bothered me as well, especially because I think there's room for some excellent characterization with Sarah and Sally. Seconding May in regards to episode 2's problems for sure.

Anyways, fic recs!

you took my hand and danced with me is a short ladies of Sherlock/DW crossover that's utterly lovely. I also have links somewhere to a Molly fic where Molly is Moriarty's twin and plays the game just as well as he does, but it's seriously disturbing (though in an interesting way).

The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows is also excellent, by the same author as the DW crossover. It's past Sherlock/Sally, and gives her a great depth and history, as well as insights into Sherlock's brain.

(I just want all the Sally fic, pretty much).

Oh, thank you! Sally has so much potential for awesome, and I do like the idea of Molly being more than she seems. Thanks for the recs!
