Japanese has different words for play.. The one we used last year is shimasu, which is used for sports or things you do. Asoubimasu is hanging/playing with friends or pets. So, by saying Inu [dog] o shimasu, they're actually saying 'I will/am do/ing the dog.'

He IS cute, but he acts like my brother. =) And of course you're not evil!
