Summary: Miroku and Kagome attend a mating ceremony
Kagome cringed as another wolf howl pierced the air. She shivered and wondered again why she had agreed to this.
“Are you cold sister?”
Kagome felt a warm pelt thrown over her shoulders and looked up to smile thankfully at Ginta. She tugged the ends together at her chest as the wolf demon plopped to the ground next to her.
“You don't have to call me that anymore you know,” she said, smirking internally as he looked at her in wide eyed wonderment.
“I guess not, now that Kouga has officially mated Ayame but you will always be sister to me.”
Kagome patted his knee gently and thanked him making the wolf blush.
Miroku watched the exchange from the opposite side of the bonfire. She seemed to be handling everything well even if she looked a little tired and uncomfortable. He was only grateful she wasn't looking sad. He didn't want to admit it but he had been worried. When Kouga had shown up in the village a little over a week ago he was uncertain what Kagome's reaction to the wolf demon would be.
After the defeat of Naraku and Kagome's departure, Kouga would drop in from time to time. Miroku wasn't sure if it was just to pick on Inuyasha or to keep up bonds of alliance. Either way he always asked Inuyasha if Kagome was back yet and always responded he had yet to mate with Ayame. His visits were sporadic at best, just as they had been during the the days of their mutual hunt for the spider hanyou.
The last visit had not gone well. Inuyasha at the time had recently mated Sango. When the wolf leader found out, the two canines had a knock down drag out fight. Miroku could only guess Kouga thought if Inuyasha was moving on then Kagome wasn't going to be coming back. They hadn't seen him for close to a year until nine days ago.
To say Kouga was flustered to see Kagome sitting outside her new home teaching the village children to read was a bit of an understatement.
Miroku threw another log on the fire and stood up to walk over to her and Ginta. He needed to be near her right now. Just remembering how Kouga and hugged her, held her, swung her around while she laughed, truly laughed for the first time since her return filled him with anger which was swiftly replaced with fear in the pit of his belly. He couldn't begrudge her for being happy to see the wolf prince. He was, after all, her friend. It was just, seeing them, happy and together like that made his heart clench. Did Kouga still harbor feelings for her? Miroku knew she had only seen him as a friend in the past but Kouga was persistent, pushy, where Miroku had been trying to be patient, kind and above all slow. Slow, so she could heal from her loss of Inuyasha. Slow, because he was certain Kagome had no inkling of his feelings for her yet. Slow, because he wanted her to see him as more than just a friend on her own. Slow, because he simply loved her and despite his old lecherous behavior was happy to just be by her side again. Those three years she was gone had seemed like forever.
Miroku sat down beside her, his body far enough so they weren't touching but close enough to feel each others warmth.
“Ayame was beautiful wasn't she?”
Miroku smiled at her and wagged his eyebrows suggestively in response. She giggled. Kagome looked around at all the dancing, baying wolves and wondered when the mating festivities would wind up. Dawn was approaching and if she heard Kouga's “howl of triumph” once again she was sure she was going to be sick. She just did not need that mental image in her head. To be honest she hadn't been keen on coming in the first place. Inuyasha had flat out refused to go and leave Sango and their new child behind. Kouga angrily insisted “someone” needed to come and witness the mating as a representative of their alliance. Before a fight could break out (how some things seem to never change) Miroku, always a peacemaker, volunteered to go.
Not one but two loud and ragged howls came from the cave above. Kagome's mind flashed to her short time in there with Shippo which was quickly and cruelly replaced with Kouga and Ayame. She covered her face with her hands and sighed. Ginta misunderstood her dismay and patted her back.
“It's ok sister. I know Kouga still feels strongly for you, don't feel bad he chose Ayame. If you had come back a little sooner he would have...,” Ginta trailed off awkwardly and scratched his head.
Miroku observed Kagome and hoped Ginta was wrong in his assumption of her feelings in the matter and that her sigh wasn't regret but embarrassment. Even he, with his own self proclaimed tendencies, was having a hard time listening to the newly mated couple. Thank the Kami's dawn was fast approaching because he didn't know how much more of it he could take.
He had been surprised but glad Kagome had insisted on coming along. She hadn't wanted him to go alone she said. It had warmed his heart at the time, especially seeing Kouga's discomfort at her inclusion. Now he understood the wolf's demeanor. How little they knew what coming here entailed. He chuckled.
“Miroku?”
He looked at her and just shook his head.
The sun peeked over the mountain top. Ginta rose and held a hand out to Kagome.
“It's done. Kouga set aside a place for you to rest before you head back. You can stay as long as you want though.”
Kagome took Ginta's hand and Miroku noted the hopeful and expectant look on the young wolf's face. It seemed Kouga wasn't the only one who had been happy to see her again.
“Thanks Ginta,” Kagome answered, “I am pretty exhausted.”
“You'll stay awhile?”
Kagome looked to Miroku who only shrugged.
“Maybe...,” she replied softly.
“Yes!”
Miroku tried not to laugh as Ginta lowered his fist and wagged his tail looking abashed.
Kagome turned to him and tugged his robe at his shoulder.
“Come on, let's go get some sleep Miroku.”
Miroku stood up as well to follow them. Ginta cocked his head in curiosity.
“You are going to sleep together?”
Kagome waved her hands in front of her wildly.
“NO! I mean, no, not together.”
“I think what Kagome means is that we are comfortable sharing the same space since we already share a home.”
Ginta looked at them both and seemed to think it through.
“Ahhh, like how we wolves all share space in the main cave.”
Kagome shifted her feet.
“Yeah, kinda like that.”
Ginta smiled.
“Oh, that's ok then. I don't think Kouga would be to happy if it was something else.”
“Like he has the right to say anything about it,” Kagome mumbled.
“Did you say something sister?”
Kagome jumped.
“No, no, nothing,” she smiled.
Ginta led them to a small cave about halfway up the cliff filled with pelts in one corner for sleeping. Her pack, someone had already brought up was resting nearby. Kagome flopped down on her back the second the wolf left.
“You owe me for this.”
Miroku sat down next to her and leaned back on his elbows, moving his head around in circles to stretch out his stiff neck.
“I don't see how. I did not ask you to come although I am grateful to not have gone through this diplomatic visit alone.”
She sighed.
“I knew there was a reason I hated politics.”
Kagome watched Miroku quietly. She didn't know if it was because she was over tired or because they had been living together for a while but she felt almost excited to finally be alone with him. It felt good to be with someone she felt so at ease with and comfortable. It didn't even bother her at all to realize there was only one place to sleep and she would have to share it with him. Her eyes grew heavy and she was almost asleep when she felt him move.
“Where are you going?”
Miroku looked down at her from his now upright sitting position.
“I was just going to the other side of the cave to let you rest. I thought you were already sleeping.”
She grabbed his arm and pulled hard until he fell down next to her with a thump.
“Don't be an idiot. The floor is freezing and you're just as exhausted as I am. Just go to sleep already.”
Miroku rolled over onto his back and sighed heavily. He was tired. He wasn't sure if it was the lack of sleep or his own desires to stay close to her that kept him from protesting further. His hand twitched and his heart skipped a beat when he felt her hand close around his.
Half asleep Kagome mumbled, “I guess it's Inuyasha that owes us for this.”
Miroku turned his head to look at her sleeping face.
“No, I am the one who owes him,” he whispered.
